[The Doctor is in a relatively good mood, and it may have something to do with the fact that he's got one of his companions with him. This companion is a fluffy black cat named Mortimer, who is currently lapping up a saucer of milk. The Doctor shakes his head as he watches him.]

Dunno how you can stand the stuff. All the species in all the universe and it has to come out of a cow.

Suppose it's a good thing we restocked the kitchen, though. 'Course, it's gonna have to be restocked every couple of weeks now that we've got so many mouths to feed. [He doesn't sound overly frustrated by this, however. Quite the opposite, in fact.] Remember when it was just you and me? Blimey, seems like forever ago... [he trails off, brooding for a moment. Then he turns his attention to Mortimer again, since the cat is demanding it by plopping down onto Nine's lap.]

Speaking of new companions, d'you think we ought to get another cat? Seems like you could use a feline friend, and maybe one who's mum won't try to claw me to death. No more domestics for me, thanks!

[Keeping his smugness contained, Braxiatel sits down to make it easier on the cat] Oh, well if you insist. [Scratches behind the ears? Rubbing the neck? Yes indeed, cats love Brax. Possibly because they are equally cunning, selfish, and obsessed with luxury.] I always have for the demands of a cat. Oh, and to say hello to you, I suppose.

[:| The Doctor is jealous. And sulking. Of course, it's difficult to tell if he's jealous of Brax or the cat. ~~He totally wants petting.~~] I dunno if questioning my wisdom counts as saying hello. Or stealing my cat.

A cat can't be stolen; he can only choose a new servant. Isn't that right, Mortimer? [Kitty gets petting and the Doctor does not, and oh dear, Brax's smugness is showing in his smile]

Yeah, well, he's not choosing you. [Nine picks the cat up from Brax's evil, manipulative clutches, and cuddles him protectively.] 'Sides, you've already got Wolsey.

No, Benny has Wolsey. I have no pets whatsoever. Really, it's very lonely.

[eyebrow] You want one? [he can get you something really hideous...]

No, no. The Collection is enough of a menagerie as is. [He kinda, you know, now has a griffin and the khalkotauroi on the Collection now, so he really isn't doing too bad with pets.]

[smiles] Wish I could see it again. Y'know, properly. But I don't want your universe merging with mine. [well, he does, but.]

[seriously] I'd have to risk you breaking my vases if ours did.

[laughs] Wouldn't touch the vases, promise. [a pause] Not that I'd have to touch them to break them, but that's beside the point...

Then I don't see the problem. I could---[But he breaks off. Because he can't make Contact to encourage the Doctor to see the Collection as it should be in a merger.]

I'm sure we can work around it one way or another. Twisting laws is our speciality.

[sighs] The problem's not in your universe, it's mine. When Omega stepped in, he felt -- [oh wait] but you wouldn't, would you?

I wouldn't, but I'd like to know that I could, if I ever... if the situation ever changes. I'm not done with Gallifrey yet.

[shakes his head] No, you couldn't. That's the problem. It's silent, Brax. That's what's what Omega felt. He felt what I feel every day.

[Braxiatel gives the Doctor a half-smile.] How lucky for him that he's already gone mad.

[he returns that half-smile, and lapses into a broody silence while petting Mortimer. He doesn't really feel like talking about Omega at the moment.]

[considering the Doctor carefully] There is... so little in the universe that I care for more than I care for the Collection. I think that the risks of you merging with it will be fine. I can put out some devices to cement my timeline and history. I need to do it anyway, to be certain that I've killed off the false reality the Daleks made. And once I have Benny back, the two of us and my time ship will be a stronger force for our history than you and your ship will be for yours.

[the Doctor's not really paying attention -- he's still distracted by the previous topic of conversation, and remembering their confrontation. but Benny's name sort of snaps him out of it] What d'you mean, once you have Benny back?

You have met Bernice on the Plane, haven't you?

'Course! But haven't you already got one?

She is mine. The Benny in my timeline disappeared on her arrival, and in turn, the Braxiatel of her timeline vanished. Well, probably. He - I - was under house arrest, so only the Axis officers know with certainty. That's why I need her back. She needs out of her bad timeline and back into the corrected history I made.

[frowns] D'you think you could really fix that with a merger?

Yes.

[And he seems convinced. No, not just convinced. His jaw his set, his head held up: this is a man who will force the universe to work out for him if it does not do as he plans for it too. He will do anything to get Benny back where he thinks she needs to be.]

[the Doctor simply nods, too tired to even contemplate other possibilities] Let me know if it works out, yeah? Don't see why it wouldn't, you two are close enough as it is.

Have I ever thanked you for dropping her off on Dellah when I was teaching there? I really should have. She has been a delight all these years.
