[The Doctor is in a relatively good mood, and it may have something to do with the fact that he's got one of his companions with him. This companion is a fluffy black cat named Mortimer, who is currently lapping up a saucer of milk. The Doctor shakes his head as he watches him.]

Dunno how you can stand the stuff. All the species in all the universe and it has to come out of a cow.

Suppose it's a good thing we restocked the kitchen, though. 'Course, it's gonna have to be restocked every couple of weeks now that we've got so many mouths to feed. [He doesn't sound overly frustrated by this, however. Quite the opposite, in fact.] Remember when it was just you and me? Blimey, seems like forever ago... [he trails off, brooding for a moment. Then he turns his attention to Mortimer again, since the cat is demanding it by plopping down onto Nine's lap.]

Speaking of new companions, d'you think we ought to get another cat? Seems like you could use a feline friend, and maybe one who's mum won't try to claw me to death. No more domestics for me, thanks!

'Course! But haven't you already got one?

She is mine. The Benny in my timeline disappeared on her arrival, and in turn, the Braxiatel of her timeline vanished. Well, probably. He - I - was under house arrest, so only the Axis officers know with certainty. That's why I need her back. She needs out of her bad timeline and back into the corrected history I made.

[frowns] D'you think you could really fix that with a merger?

Yes.

[And he seems convinced. No, not just convinced. His jaw his set, his head held up: this is a man who will force the universe to work out for him if it does not do as he plans for it too. He will do anything to get Benny back where he thinks she needs to be.]

[the Doctor simply nods, too tired to even contemplate other possibilities] Let me know if it works out, yeah? Don't see why it wouldn't, you two are close enough as it is.

Have I ever thanked you for dropping her off on Dellah when I was teaching there? I really should have. She has been a delight all these years.

There's no need to thank me for that, Brax. [he's smiling a bit, though]

[Brax grins.] The best birthday present you've ever given me. Almost makes up for all those rubbish socks you keep sending.

Oi, they're not rubbish! You've just got no taste.

I've plenty more taste than you do.

[rolls his eyes] You wish.

[there's another pause, but it's slightly less broody than before] Brax, if our universes do end up merging...would you mind helping me with something?

I did not survive several centuries negotiating the labyrinth of Gallifreyan politics by answering 'yes' every time anyone asked me a vague request.

[Then, he smiles.] But yes, Doctor. What do you need?

[awkwardly] It's not so much what I need, it's just...Omega.

[a frown] I may have to rescind my agreement. What about Omega?

[the Doctor is more hesitant now] He's...I thought maybe you could talk to him, try to smooth things over, but it might just make things worse.

[A very long pause]

You'll have to explain in a bit more detail than that. What, precisely, am I meant to smooth over, and how am I meant to do it?

Er. There was sort of an...incident, and he threatened to kill me again, but I'll admit I pushed him into it...

[Another pause]

I'm going to hire you a therapist.

[frown] I don't need a therapist! I'm alright. [lies] Just a bit...disappointed. Didn't think he'd actually want to.

Let me give you a bit of advice about ancient Gallifreyans who have been left on their own for milennia: they are very rarely sane people. They are bitter, angry, and terribly mad from all that isolation. They invariably want revenge. I may be livid with Omega for killing you, but I can't say I'm particularly shocked that he'd wish to do it again.

[wry smile] I'm not shocked myself. But it wasn't revenge that got him so angry, it was what I'd done. I sort of...offered my blood to Diva, and he saw the marks. [he's fully expecting the same sort of disgust he got from Omega]

[Braxiatel has to take a moment to process this. He is a terribly intelligent man and a quick thinker, but a bit like Caster's "So is pederasty still practised?" the Doctor's statement has caught him off-guard.]

May one ask why? Not about his anger, the Founders' hatred for vampires is hardly a secret. I mean why you made your blood-offering.

Actually, on second thought, I know the answer. But what do you want me to say to him? "So sorry about Thete, but you know how racial prejudices fade with time. Don't worry; I'm certain you can still kill the vampire if you put your hearts to it."

[he's glad he doesn't have to answer that "why" question, but his expression is as determined as Brax's was in regard to forcing the universe to work out for him] He's not going to kill her.

[Braxiatel is only mild in reply] I do hope that isn't the message you want me to send back. I doubt he'd take kindly to it and I am quite fond of this body. It's served me well for centuries.

'Course not, don't be stupid. Just don't encourage him. Much as I've wanted her dead myself in the past, she's got my protection now. ...Long as she doesn't muck up her chance, anyway.
