[The Doctor is in a relatively good mood, and it may have something to do with the fact that he's got one of his companions with him. This companion is a fluffy black cat named Mortimer, who is currently lapping up a saucer of milk. The Doctor shakes his head as he watches him.]

Dunno how you can stand the stuff. All the species in all the universe and it has to come out of a cow.

Suppose it's a good thing we restocked the kitchen, though. 'Course, it's gonna have to be restocked every couple of weeks now that we've got so many mouths to feed. [He doesn't sound overly frustrated by this, however. Quite the opposite, in fact.] Remember when it was just you and me? Blimey, seems like forever ago... [he trails off, brooding for a moment. Then he turns his attention to Mortimer again, since the cat is demanding it by plopping down onto Nine's lap.]

Speaking of new companions, d'you think we ought to get another cat? Seems like you could use a feline friend, and maybe one who's mum won't try to claw me to death. No more domestics for me, thanks!

[Braxiatel contents himself with giving the cat attention, rather than risking inebriation or excessive sincerity.]

Besides, I've spent centuries learning how to ignore everything you say. This is your compensation.

[The Doctor laughs softly, and this time there is a bit of humour in it] Ever heard of overcompensating?

I have, actually. Is your sonic screwdriver working now?

[:|] Oi, that's not overcompensating.

Did I say it was? What a suspicious mind you have.

[sulks] You implied it.

If implications were grounds for allegations, the face of Gallifrey would be a very different one.

[eloquently] Shut up, Brax.

[Braxiatel - wait for it, wait for it - reaches out to ruffle what hair the Doctor has] Sulking has never been any good for catching the attention of human women, Thete.

[asdflkj. Have a glaaaare, Brax. Like a cat who just got petted the wrong way.] Stop that! And what've human women got to do with anything?

I don't know, but you certainly can't seem to get enough of them.

[frowns] I've only got one travelling with me at the mo'. ...'Course, Dorothy's not exactly human, technically speaking. Jack's human, but he's a 51st century bloke.

And Omega is Gallifreyan.

[the Doctor has another beer, and pretends Brax didn't just bring up Omega again] So's Straxus. Hasn't started travelling with me yet, though. [he sounds rather disappointed about that :(]

What is it with your interest in Straxus? He's a cut above the rest, I'll admit, and much improved since I knew him in the Capitol, but he's hardly the Gallifreyan I'd choose to run off with. Damon is a much better choice, if you have to start collecting them.

[ffff] I'm not running off with Straxus, I just -- hang on, Damon's here?

Did I say that? I just suggested an alternate choice.

Didn't even know you knew Damon, much less thought that highly of him. ...If he's here, though...I'm not sure I want him to meet me.

Thete, far be it for me to try to suggest you be reasonable, but this is a happy opportunity to be with your own kind again. [He can't help but smile at the irony of what he is about to say.] I don't want our time to be overshadowed by the future.

[The Doctor smiles wryly at the irony too, but shakes his head] Damon looks up to me, Brax. I don't want him seeing how I'll become.

[Watching the Doctor, something occurs to Braxiatel. He leans forward.]

Doctor. Did you expect to survive what you did to end the War?

[the Doctor suddenly looks incredibly awkward] Does it matter?

Yes, Doctor. It does.

Why? [he sounds genuinely confused here]

[mildly] It means you can't harass me about trying to have Hulzarrian carp for dinner.

[That's what he says, but what he means is that he understands. That he has nearly done the same. That only the Doctor's intervention stopped him.]
