Hm? Oh, I suppose so, yeah. She was very interested in astronomy so we had that to talk about. Oh and she made the funniest face at me during the vows. I nearly cracked up. Would've been bad.

[raises an eyebrow; 'I suppose so' is not the proper response to that sort of question]

[plays with the top of a bottle] Humans think of love differently. They have categories for it and certain behaviours and all that attached to each type. It's a bit of a loaded question from you lot. [pauses, then rubs the back of his neck] Sorry, that was a bit rude. I mean I think of it differently than you might.

What's love to you, then?

[runs his finger in a circle around the neck of the bottle] Oooh, loads of things. No categories or types. Just a spectrum of feelings. I love some people more than others. That's all there is to it.

That's a shite answer, Doctor. Try something a bit less avoidant.

Oi, was not! What's this a bottle of, anyway? [flips the bottle over in his hand] Rum? Ah, well. [fishes behind the bar for a glass and pours himself a bit of rum] Hawaii has some fun banana, pineapple and rum drinks, you know. [swirls the rum in the glass] So then, if you're an expert, what's a proper answer about love, eh? Let's hear yours.

No, you apparently know my human definition of love. I want to hear what the Time Lord answer is.

[snorts and sips some rum] Time Lords think all that is beneath them. A fascinating, novel little concept of lower species.

I never fit in with them, though. I liked passion and love and feeling everything and exploring. In fact, I like most of the things they were against.

So, then, tell me about what love is to you. [a dog with a bone, yes]

[the Doctor knows all about dogs and bones] Love is...being willing to do anything for someone. Giving your life for them... Believing in them and having faith in them. Love means you care about them more than you care about yourself.

Sounds a lot like the normal human definition, Doctor.

Does it? What's your definition of it, Sam?

Love is... it's, uhm... I don't know. I... can't define it. Love's too different every time it is.

[snorts and elbows him] Cheater.

Ow! [abuse hurts more when it's not from Gene, apparently] But I can't! I mean, if I think of the people I love, it's - it's different for them all. But it's still love.

[gives him an amused look] Exactly. It's different for everyone. You love some people a little more or a little less. Maybe you have more faith in others. That's how it is. it'd be perfectly fine if you lot didn't insist on putting things like 'platonic' and 'romantic' and 'in love' and all that.

[looks at him for a moment] ...Have humans been boxing you in about love, then?

[mildly] I suppose sometimes. You just usually have ideas about it. If I love someone, I'm not categorizing it by if I'd snog them or not.

Well, you wouldn't snog your mother, would you? It's a pretty bad definition.

Of course not. The person who counted for that hated me. Most of my family did. So I can't quite do incest anyway.
