[See Doctor. See Doctor run. See Doctor run ~~half-naked~~ on the Plane. Actually he is sort of half-naked, considering his purple jumper is torn nearly to shreds, and his signature leather jacket is nowhere to be seen. Basically, he looks like he got clawed by a large, angry animal. Which he quite possibly has been, if the long, bloody scratch marks are any indication. He stops when he realises he managed to escape (for now), laughing to himself and shaking his head.] Now that's what I call convenient. I ought to try this more often.

[he relaxes slowly beneath the touch] It's a curse, actually - a tree? [oh, insatiable curiosity]

[nods] Yes, a tree. From the Forest of Cheem; direct descendant of the rain forests of Earth. [his expression is both fond and sad at the same time] Her name was Jabe.

[he hesitates for a moment, before raising his hand and setting it atop the Doctor's; softly] What was she like?

[the gesture startles him - reminds him of her, even - and now Remus isn't the only one who looks vulnerable] ...She was beautiful. Clever, too. Machines didn't make any sense to her, since she was a tree, but she was still very clever, and kind. She understood. She knew...[closes his eyes, but the guilt is tangible in his expression] She sacrificed herself, so I could save everyone else.

[softly] She sounds brilliant.

[takes a breath] And that was her choice. I don't think...she'd want you to feel bad for it.

She might not, no, but even so...[shrugs] Happened awhile ago, anyway. ...Well, sort of. The year was 5.5/Apple/26. Roughly five billion years. End of the world.

I don't think it matters how long - [and his eyes get really wide; stupidly, the word that parts his lips is] ...Apple?

[laughs] Like I said, roughly five billion years. Dating techniques get a bit different when you've got all those 0's to deal with.

What does apple mean? [pause; sheepishly] I should probably be asking about the end of the world.

[hell if I know what the "apple" means, fff] Oh it's not so bad, really. The lot of you are so worked up about how you'll be wiped out that you never stop to imagine the impossible. You survive. The world is a different story - sun expands, eventually.

[see how we gave you an out there] Some things really are inevitable, I suppose. The people...they all left, then?

[that was lovely ty! The Doctor nods, smiling] Yep, everyone left. Off to explore other planets, build new civilisations, and...well. Do what humans do best. [grins]

[darkly] Fight each other? [his eyes widen, and he shakes his head] Sorry.

[have a sympathetic smile, Remus] Well, yes, that never seems to stop. But no, I was going to say dance.

...Dance?

I haven't done much of that.

No? [and he smirks a bit, in a "maybe this is an invitation" sort of way] You ought to. They've got a ballroom here and everything.

But I was actually implying a metaphor...humans are very good at surviving because they're good at well...branching out. So many species, so little time. [chuckles] Lots of interbreeding between them going on, especially by...oh, the 51st century.

...Oh. [awkward expression ahoy] Er. That makes sense.

[grins] 'Course it does. [pause] You alright?

Mmm. [his brow furrows] So humans are genetically compatible with a bunch of different races?

Yep! There's a whole universe full of different species out there, y'know. Look at me, I'm half-human on my mother's side. [winks]

...You are?

Wouldn't have said it if I wasn't, would I?

[wry smile] I don't know yet.

[shrugs] Suppose you haven't really got a reason to trust me. 'Course, I'm generally not too trusting myself. Haven't really got anybody in my own universe that knows half the things I've told you.

Well, you may be lying, or teasing, or obfuscating - hard to know, so far. [slight nod] We can't use such information against each other, not in the way people in our worlds can. It's safer to be honest here. [looks thoughtful, and a bit wistful] People seem a bit more - open-minded, too, by and large.
