[seated in an ornate armchair, speaking in fluent, articulate, and rather pleasant-to-the-ears Gallifreyan]

It's actually a bit disgusting, hearing you lot speak Gallifreyan so primitively. Like chanting off - no, that metaphor's incomprehensible without a background in high mathematics. Fine. Like writing Calculus and finding everyone else doing basic algebra.

[then he changes to Russian - less articulate, of course, but he's comfortable with the language]

This one, though, this one's a bit ironic. Look at me, the Master, the deathless, blathering on in Russian. Haven't been in ages, should probably go back and put a few more legends into the locals.

[sips from his wine, and slips back into Gallifreyan]

At least the people of the city still understand me.

[winces and automatically meets the sudden probing by raising his mental defenses]

Oi! Do you mind warning me? [lowers them a little] Careful with that.

'Warning,' I can't give you a warning if we can hardly understand each other. Unless you're warning me. What of?

[he's still not gentle, pushing in and forming several temporary links with the Doctor]

It works better if you try, too.

[frowns and, after a moment, starts forming links as well]

I meant you could warn me. Tap my temples or just give a little push or something.

[they're hardly deep, permenant links, but they're working somewhat]

You could stop whining. You're always whining. Whine whine whine. It's annoying and it makes me want to punch you.

So I do.

[this is a mental punch]

[hits his shoulder] Stop that! I'm not whiny. I didn't even know what you said.

[that knocks one of his hands away; the Master smacks the Doctor on the head, then grabs the Doctor's hands and puts them to the Master's temples before putting his fingers back on the Master's temples and sinking back in]

You could try not to undo what we were up to.

[there are mental grumbles but he quickly gets back to forming the links]

Right, right. How's that?

Better.

[he settles in, rather deep into the Doctor's mind, casually forming links]

Walking around with our fingers on each other's temples is hardly practical.

[snorts softly, getting a few more links in place]

There are a few planets, though. None near us time or space wise.

Everyone understands me. Do they understand you?

Rose has Japanese. And Gallifreyan. Been able to talk to a few people using German.

In the city, Doctor.

[pouts a bit] Oh, right. Yeah they can.

What else have you learned?

[he could sift around for it, but that's more effort]

Not much, really. Seems like everyone is limited to two languages. That goddess is keeping track of them and trying to make a chart. And I can tell you're speaking Gallifreyan but I can't...understand it.

That Goddess will try to kill me if I speak to her, so I shan't be offering any information to her.

And telepathic communication doesn't seem to fully circumvent it.

[frowning] Kill you? Well, no, can't really blame her at all.

It doesn't. I can't actually tell what you're saying, really, just...what it is. Sort of annoying.

The meaning without the words. Really, more efficient than language itself.

You enjoy hearing the Gallifreyan, don't you, Doctor? You sap.

I quite like the words.

I quite like meaning.

The way you cling to something you once loathed. [rubs his temple lightly] It's pathetic, really.

Well, I like both.

Isn't it? You used to hate Gallifrey. Shun it for everything it did. Not that I can blame you - just think of those meddling idiots, those stuffed up fools who didn't understand a thing about the universe, for all their studies. Now that it's gone, you cling to the remnants as best you can.

I never said I missed them. I just...they shouldn't be gone in the first place and that's my fault.

Anyway, haven't heard that saying, have you?Don't know what you have until it's gone. Well, something like that. I guess the wording isn't important right now anyway.
