[The Doctor is back around! Well, more or less. He technically didn't leave, he's just been avoiding the Plane entirely. He would rather still be away but lately he prefers sitting somewhere away from the TARDIS while he does his work. It’s more relaxing to take a stroll through space.

Speaking of work, he’s completely engrossed in a data pad. He’s scrolling through it with a stylus, occasionally stopping to click something or read longer. Once or twice, his reading is accompanied by a small holographic projection of various planets above the screen.

He’s taken to walking around the empty space, mostly following the arms of a spiral galaxy. Get his attention if you want him!]

You could save Susan.

[Direct hit has been made.] ...What do you mean?

Forget the Rani and Romana, Drax and all the rest. You could get Susan's bio-data extract. You could bring her back.

And don't go on about the ethics of it. If the High Council hadn't been willing to do that, I wouldn't be here.

I don't think the High Council was the pinnacle of morality.

[more slowly, to make the words stick]

I wouldn't be here.

But! If you want to waste a perfect opportunity to save your granddaughter, well, that's very you, isn't it?

[Bites off his comment and has to reel himself in.] I don't know if she'd want to be brought back.

Perhaps, then, you could ask her.

That seems like a slightly awkward question.

Ask a Matrix data projection of her. From the Lady President.

I can't just...ask, can I?

If you want, I could hypnotise her. Or we could trick her, as you prefer.

[A pause and he follows it up with a look.] We're not hypnotising her.

Aww, but we haven't hypnotised anyone as a team effort in centuries!

[but of course he's still grinning as he cheerily announces,]

Trickery it is!

I'm a bit out of practice with tricks, unless you've got a clever one you aren't sharing.

Oh, I have a number of them, Doctor.

But I don't think there will be a need. Do you?

[grins]

And can you think of any good reason not to?

Aside from pure instinct? No.

[presses his palm flat against the Doctor's chest, right between his hearts]

Instinct is telling you that this is the right thing to do. That this is how we can make things right.

[His hearts pick up slightly and he sighs.]

You're really too good at this.

Perhaps. But that's what you need, isn't it?

[he's smiling now, because he can feel the hearts]

[He laughs a bit, though he doesn't sound unkind.]

I think some people would debate you on that.

If I ever listened to 'some people,' I'd be the Lord President of Gallifrey by now.

[a moment, and then he slowly draws his hand away]

And if you did, you wouldn't have left, either.

[The Doctor tilts his head at him, thinking.]

We don't really have time at the moment.

We are Time Lords. If our time is not now, then it will be later.
