[have the TARDIS walking about with a glass of some sort of wine. she's so taking advantage of having prolonged, physical projections to finally try things she couldn't before]

I will never understand the fascination with imbibing alcohol. This is the fourth one I've had and I am as unimpressed with this one as the last three. I must wonder why the Doctor insists on keeping it around.

I've noticed a great deal more people arriving in this place. If we could calculate when a new being in being drawn into this nexus, perhaps we could harness that energy as a means of escape for ourselves. Has anyone tried such a thing, yet?

[frowns] You don't... care about other people?

[tilts her head] Not in any way you would understand. I protect those on board when I must and I do everything within my power to aid the Doctor and keep him safe. But I am a machine, boy, sentient though I may be. Emotions are not of the same importance to me. Only the Doctor matters, in the long run. Only the Doctor remains.

Doesn't sound like the sort of philosophy the Doctor espouses.

I am not like other beings, human. I am the Doctor's and he is mine. I am his most trusted, steadfast companion and I would do anything for him. He knows this. My lack of emotional attachment to the majority of his companions or the human race mean little in the long run.

But it's not the way he thinks, is it? He cares about... everyone, sounds like, from what he's told me. Thinks that every life matters.

So you basically disagree with his entire philosophy on life, the universe, and everything.

[laughs] Silly boy. You're too young to try and explain away the Doctor, especially to me. And just because I do not care -- and honestly, what does it matter to you -- does not mean I disagree with helping. Which is what the Doctor does. Caring, well...that is something I don't think you could fathom.

You do realise that demeaning other people doesn't make you any better. It just makes it sound like you don't have anything real to back yourself up.

I have centuries upon centuries to back me up, boy. You say he cares? Caring involves attachment, but helping does not hinge upon base emotions. You say he wants to save everyone, and you are utterly true. But to care? No. He is a Time Lord and he is great in so many ways, but to care that much for so many people, when, in the end, he must watch at least some of them die? No. He does not care in the way you believe he does, and you would do well to remember that the next time you decide to lecture me.

That's was a very defensive speech.

I need not justify myself to you.

And yet you just did. Feeling a bit insecure, aren't you? Or will your retort be, "You can't possibly understand, you're just a human"? You need to touch up on your social skills. Whether or not you care about other people, you're going to have to put up with a lot of us, and you're not doing too well at the moment.

[petulantly] I have never had need of this before and I see no reason to now. I don't need you. [frowns, brow furrowed] Why do you care?

Do I need a reason?

Of course you do. I'm hardly in need of rescue and I have no vested interest in you, so what possible reason could you have for your interest in me?

You wouldn't understand; it's beyond a ship's comprehension.

[oh he did NOT. now she's just gonna get childish] At least I can comprehend the basic rules of dressing oneself in clothing that is suitable and aesthetically pleasing.

[and alas, Sam can't help but laugh]

[gapes and fumes and finally just reaches out to slap him upside the head, since she can't very well use steam]

[grinning with repressed laughter] If there is one thing I can thank the Guv for, it's building up my tolerance for abuse.

And is that another form of your 'caring,' then? Striking one another? Hurting one another? That is no better than what the Master does to gain the Doctor's attention.

[stops laughing immediately] I am nothing like him. He's a cold-blooded, sadistic murderer. He doesn't care a thing for anyone and I - [he smiles a smile sick with anger] Hey! Maybe you two could bond over that. Not caring about people, that is. You might have more in common than you first thought.

[you just compared her to the man that effectively raped her, Sam. now you're both unhappy, good job] You are wrong about that. The Master cares, boy. He cares to see them suffer, to take everything from them and watch them writhe in agony. He cares because he wants the Doctor to see him. I may dislike people, or be indifferent to them, but I would not harm them. I would not rip them apart and pervert their very being in order to change them to suit my twisted needs.

You're one step away from it.

[acidly, imperiously] I am not. He has caused the Doctor -- has caused me -- more pain than you could ever imagine, and I will never be like him.

He hurts people because he wants to and he doesn't care about them. You hurt people because you're ignorant and you don't care about us enough to learn. Say the Doctor makes you angry - say you want revenge. Would you have any qualms with hurting innocent people to get to him? Only that the Doctor'd be mad at you, I'm sure. That is one step away from the Master.
