[seated in an ornate armchair, speaking in fluent, articulate, and rather pleasant-to-the-ears Gallifreyan]

It's actually a bit disgusting, hearing you lot speak Gallifreyan so primitively. Like chanting off - no, that metaphor's incomprehensible without a background in high mathematics. Fine. Like writing Calculus and finding everyone else doing basic algebra.

[then he changes to Russian - less articulate, of course, but he's comfortable with the language]

This one, though, this one's a bit ironic. Look at me, the Master, the deathless, blathering on in Russian. Haven't been in ages, should probably go back and put a few more legends into the locals.

[sips from his wine, and slips back into Gallifreyan]

At least the people of the city still understand me.

Oh, lovely. The French improves and in return, I can't understand you.

Oh, self, am I to take it that we don't have any common languages?

[he already knows the answer to that - or would if he knew what was being asked, so for now he just does a gesture between the two of them, and shakes his head. :| charades aren't awesome]

Completely unfair.

Oh, that's just someone playing with us. [this Master can do a grumpy-face, too :|]

[he nods, though he's more nodding to the grumpy face than anything]

French and cat of all things. Though, I suppose I already spoke both, more or less. It's just utterly annoying.

All languages we're familiar with, though. Just that we've been limited to them.

This is completely unfair.

Now what can we do about it?

[D: Self, idk what you're saying, plz gesture. so the Master, in his confusion, mimes writing/drawing on some paper]

[pulls out a notepad, and then has no idea how to say, 'what the hell do we do?' with pictures]

[he rubs his eyes]

Damn.

[he shrugs, gestures for him to hand it over]

[obligingly hands over the notepad]

[he taps the pen on the paper for a minute, before testing to see if he can write in English or anything; no luck, so he moves on

to ... trying something, getting frustrated, scribbling over it, then thrusting it back at Self]

[....they're fail at pictionary, yup]

[he huffs and crosses his arms]

[sighs and runs a hand through his hair]

[he shrugs weakly]

And I don't want to use a translator.

I would hate to have someone translate for us. [since they're the same person, their brains FIT. How cute]

[HE WILL GET TO TALK TO SELF SOMEHOW, so now he's trying another angle, as they fail epically at pictionary.

he raises his hands to his temples, then points at Self]

[nods and puts his hands to self's temples]

[and he puts his on Self's as well. oh boy, Contact time! how special]

[awww, they sync up so well! The Master's done this with the Doctor already, so he knows about how far in he has to go before they'll be able to understand each other. He also knows his own mind, so he's careful of all the things he should be careful of]

How's this? It should work better than it did with the Doctor.

Better. [and of course, he's very careful himself, taking cues from Self on what, precisely, to do. mainly because he reaaaally needs to talk to Self. not in the sense he has something urgent to say so much as he refuses to be denied the ability to speak with Self whenever he wants] You'd think this place would've been decent enough to allow us a common language.

We do not, of course, expect any decency from this place. What have we learned? This is simply the meaning of words and not the words themselves.

[his tendancy towards collective pronouns might be of concern]

Would that make us a multilanguage dictionary, or omniscient towards language? There are dozens of meanings for every word we use; the challenge is in finding the right ones and piecing it together.
