[seated in an ornate armchair, speaking in fluent, articulate, and rather pleasant-to-the-ears Gallifreyan]

It's actually a bit disgusting, hearing you lot speak Gallifreyan so primitively. Like chanting off - no, that metaphor's incomprehensible without a background in high mathematics. Fine. Like writing Calculus and finding everyone else doing basic algebra.

[then he changes to Russian - less articulate, of course, but he's comfortable with the language]

This one, though, this one's a bit ironic. Look at me, the Master, the deathless, blathering on in Russian. Haven't been in ages, should probably go back and put a few more legends into the locals.

[sips from his wine, and slips back into Gallifreyan]

At least the people of the city still understand me.

[awww, they sync up so well! The Master's done this with the Doctor already, so he knows about how far in he has to go before they'll be able to understand each other. He also knows his own mind, so he's careful of all the things he should be careful of]

How's this? It should work better than it did with the Doctor.

[and of course, he's very careful himself, taking cues from Self on what, precisely, to do. mainly because he reaaaally needs to talk to Self. not in the sense he has something urgent to say so much as he refuses to be denied the ability to speak with Self whenever he wants] You'd think this place would've been decent enough to allow us a common language.

We do not, of course, expect any decency from this place. What have we learned? This is simply the meaning of words and not the words themselves.

Would that make us a multilanguage dictionary, or omniscient towards language? There are dozens of meanings for every word we use; the challenge is in finding the right ones and piecing it together.

We understand what is meant.

[and he does exactly as needed without a moment's hesitation; he's good with the mind, even more so when it's his- so like Self, he avoids anything unnecessary]

Despite being in our mind, I have not picked up any French. I cannot. So it seems we cannot learn new languages.

Nor I any Gallifreyan. [a pause] The meanings don't properly connect with the words, perhaps? We know what is being meant, but we cannot put words to meaning.

Yes, that's it. It just slips away.

Language is a slippery thing.

We'd go off on a metaphor, but there's no need to.

Metaphors would only make it much more difficult to discern. All that 'as if', 'like', and 'is'. Wonderful thing, metaphor, in writing- but when coming down to meanings, absolutely atrocious.

We really should avoid them like this.
