[please take note: the Brigadier is on the Astral Plane - but not as he usually is. no, this time, he's here with his desk and his paperwork... and he's asleep. the Brigadier has popped off to the Astral Plane to catch up on sorely needed sleep without losing any time. his cap is laying off to the side, his hair is slightly mussed, and he's still got a pen in one hand]

[suddenly much more alert] What? [and he proceeds to go over what has been done, eying them carefully] Mmm. ...I thought I had gone over all the possibilities...

[he flashes her a grin] No, no, of course not.

It was a simple oversight on your part, my dear Brigadier. Your mind simply cannot calculate that many possibilities and variables in the time needed to conjure these numbers. [smiles] That being said, you did quite a fine job with what you had. Brilliant tactician.

Is that a polite way of saying 'leave the numbers to someone else'?

[he stretches] Thank you. They may not be my men, but I'm responsible for them nevertheless.

Only if myself or the Doctor are around, my dear Brigadier.

[nods] Any loss of life is something the Doctor would not want. I may not care, but...

Of course.

Some casualties are necessary. If you can keep all your men alive, you're lucky - but odds are, a lot of good men'll end up dying. [he rubs one of his eyes] You and the Doctor aren't soldiers, after all. The three of us see it in different ways.

The Doctor has no place in battle, that is certain. He gets into enough trouble running from it.

[he nods] You're right on that. And... I do admit, there are times in which I think he refuses to believe - or understand - that it is impossible to save everyone. He's a good man for wanting to keep everyone alive, but...

[nods, tightening her lips] Not everyone deserves to be alive, either.

Yes. It's not a pleasant truth, but it's all the same. I don't call the shots on who deserves it, wouldn't want to, but there are some... well, back when the Master was caught, I was hoping he'd get the death penalty.

[the Brig pauses]

I'd appreciate if you didn't tell the Doctor that, as well. Don't need to cause any pointless troubles.

I won't tell him. [smiles wanly] If it helps, I share the sentiment, Brigadier. I've had the chance to be his cause of death, however. There are few things more satisfying than saving the Doctor from that ... creature.

I figured you might, otherwise I'd have kept it to myself. [a pause] Did you, now?

But of course.

[nods] He was pulled into the Eye of Harmony inside me. Rather suppose he was ripped to pieces inside it. [sniffs] It's the least he deserved, or deserves still.

Eye of... no, nevermind, I probably wouldn't understand it anyway. [thinking] What version of him? I've seen the two about here.

The incarnation between the two here, honestly. Possessed the body of some American, which certainly didn't help his arrogance at all. [frowns] He wanted the Doctor's body so he could have his remaining regenerations.

[nods] If we've any luck, he won't show. Having two of him is bad enough.

[the Brig raises a brow] That's... odd.

Having any of him is bad enough. I'd rather they all just stay dead.

[tilts her head] Is that so strange? He was surviving on borrowed time as it was, stealing a Traken body after his final regeneration finally failed him. His newest was apparently reborn for the Time War, regenerations and all. [frowns] They never should have brough him back.

Indeed.

[he slowly nods] What number was he on in my time? I was never quite sure. [he pauses] Hmph. I agree on that.

I ... cannot remember, to be honest. I believe he was on his thirteenth, however. [nods, considering him] He has done so much wrong. As much as I hated his younger reincarnations, he never did much to personally harm me. This newest one, however...
