--Right. This is a bit weird, isn't it? Standing in the middle of nowhere, all alone and talking to myself. And the stars, I could be talking to them, as well.
I need to stop spending so much time with Sam. Madness isn't contagious or anything, but I've been starting to talk to myself more lately, and, well, it is Sam.
Anyway. Am I still asleep? That'd explain it. I've had a dream like this once before. Well, not exactly like this. But close to it.

It's nice, though, this place. Sort of pretty, even if it is a bit weird and I have no clue where I am. And it's quiet. That's nice, too, considering. It's a bit loud everywhere in Manchester, I think. Hard to hear yourself think, sometimes. I think that's life everywhere, though, unless you're out in the country. Maybe I should consider that. But it wouldn't be nearly as interesting.

First thing is that if you're mad, we're all mad. Including the Guv. Not entirely unlikely considering how much head trauma's he's suffered, but.

Can you - [rubs his eyes, aggh, headache!] - could you go back - do you know how to go back? - go back and see if me and the Guv are around? Just check if anyone can get in contact with us.

You have to - it's not thinking it. It's more like... when you take a step forwards, you're not taking a step forwards. You're just stepping. You have to just step forwards and go home. It sounds... like absolute nonsense, actually. But it's not hard once you do it once.

Uhm... this is an experiment. It's real. I think. Lapis and Lazuli, those are the Twins, they and Meredith are pretty much in charge of things. It's not... Have you ever watched any science fiction films with alternate universes? This is some sort of meeting place between them. And the alternate universes, they're sort of lain on top of each other, and they merge sometimes.

I...dunno, really. You could always explain what you were going on about when you first saw me.

Well, it's - if I'm right - when the Guv and I first found ourselves here, it was sort of like... two identical worlds overlapping one another. My reality and the Guv's reality. And in his reality, I'd gone missing, and in mine, he'd gone missing. I could see him and he could see me, but no one else in our CIDs could see the person opposite.

Yes, it's mad, no, I didn't come up with it and it has absolutely nothing to do with 'Hyde,' and no, it's not going to go away when you wake up tomorrow morning.

[Blinks] Yeah, I am. And that does explain why I haven't seen either of you yet today.

[nods] You'll probably see us in the office - CID overlapped when it was me and the Guv, anyway - but the rest of the people at CID won't be able to see us.

Now, realities can be merged, Annie. After a bit of time here, the Guv and I managed to completely merge our realities. There are also bits and pieces of other realities in our Manchester. You'll find that you'll end up with bits of the worlds of the people you spend a lot of time with.

What that means for us is that you'll have to spend a lot of time around me and the Guv, and that, in the meantime, we're going to have to make temporary arrangements for the running of CID. It was easier for us; we just each told the team that the other was undercover, and I was acting DCI while he was gone. The cover stories merged with our realities. What to do now, though...

DS Carling was only recently re-promoted to Sargeant rank. That makes his position a tenuous one as far as consideration goes.

Nope! We should probably talk to the Guv. He'll want to get ahold of at least the murder cases, knowing him...

He made me hand over every case file [though Sam totally didn't hand over EVERY case file] but I'm not sure what he'll do for you, since he can't leave you in charge.
