[There have been many times in Jamie's life where he's not understood what's going on, usually when there's a name or a word or an idea that's far past his time. Usually he figures out some way to get through, either by questions or by pretending he has a clue. It's worked well enough for him before.

Today, however, it's more difficult to do that, thanks to the very large blank in his memory. It would possibly be frustrating if he wasn't still somewhat disorientated by what had happened, but mostly right now he feels strange, in a bit of a daze that makes thinking difficult. In an effort to try and clear the fog around his head, he starts to wander the Plane with no clear destination in mind. Eventually, he finds himself over by the forest, with a strong urge to sit which he doesn't bother to try and fight, instead settling under a large tree and unwrapping a bundle that he's been carrying with him. In the bundle is a broken hunting knife, which he stares down at like he's expecting it to give him some answers. It doesn't really seem to be cooperating, though, and after a moment he sighs, shaking his head even as he continues to look at the object in his hand.]

Och, I wish I knew what was going on.

Aye, in the lab.

[Which means pretty much what Oliver thinks it means - or at least he's fairly sure. He lets his gaze drop for a moment, then glances back up again, his mouth set in an unusually solemn way, even for him.]

There's one way to find out, isn't there?

[He doesn't say thank you in so many words, but he appreciates the sympathy, and the expression on his face does a good job of saying it for him. She's right, though. They need to figure out who did this before anyone else dies.]

I already told ye what I know about that, but...look, I can take ye to where I've got that place set up for Trouble. Maybe I'd gotten there before whatever happened to me happened and there'll be some sort of clue still around.

Oh, the Doctor did, a long time ago when we were first traveling together.

[So it's really just something he'd picked up along the way. But he looks a little thoughtful at the mention of them being related, because it's possible. However, he's not sure how they'd be related, exactly.]

Yes, I see what you mean, but I'm still not finding any sort of pattern there.

Then he might know something more about it. [he'll have to ask.] Is there somewhere he tends to favour here?

Mm… I have to admit, I'm not too sure what it could be, either. But… why else would we have them?

[ Sigh... ]

Yes, yes... I suppose it is.

[ A pause, and he frowns. What's he doing? There are more important things to worry about here. Like who killed Jamie, for example. ]

Do you remember it, Jamie?

I gather that unusual happenings are fairly standard here [he makes a slight gesture towards a near-by glowing flower to punctuate the point], but that must be strange by any standard.
So you don't remember what broke it then, eh?

[she nods at the offer. inwardly, she's a little disappointed. she was hoping for new information, rather than just the same offer Eithan made. she found absolutely nothing at that scene, and she has a feeling the result will be the same this time--but still, she isn't going to ignore that opportunity] Think you can walk, or should I find you later?

[Oliver's grief at that confirmation is obvious. he squeezes Jamie's shoulder. but at the question, he opens his mouth to protest--only to find that he can't say anything at all. after an awkward pause, he snaps his mouth closed. finally, softly, he says:] If...you're sure.

Depends on which one of him it is, I suppose. I could find my Doctor easily enough, though. Maybe he'd be able to make some sort of sense out of these things, if nothing else.

[It seems like it's something he should remember, shouldn't it? And it's like it's almost there, the thought of it tickling at the back of his mind, like there is some sort of memory there that wants to break through. But try as he might, he can't get his brain to cooperate - at least right now. So even though he doesn't answer the Doctor right away, and the expression of on his face is that of someone trying so very hard to pull up that memory, eventually all he's able to to do is shake his head.]

I...I can't, Doctor. I should be able to, but I can't.

[bonnypiperlad]

[He follows the gesture over to the flower and shrugs.]

Well, someone brought that in from their world, I think, but that's true. And I've no idea what broke it, only that I'd woken up with it next to me. Maybe it's...och, I don't know, some sort of clue.

[bonnypiperlad]

[He's hoping even if there's not a clue, there'll be something to jog his memory. As it is, right now he's got nothing useful to offer, which is frustrating.]

I can walk. Here, let me just...

[Get to his feet - which he's able to manage with the help of the tree he was sitting under. And once he's up, he looks more or less mobile, if ever so slightly wobbly still. Not wobbly enough that he thinks he needs help, though.]

There. Alright, it's not far. Come on, let's go.

[He's not entirely sure, no, but at the same time there's been just enough that's happened that he feels like he needs to know, and he gives Oliver a tight nod before deliberately nicking his thumb on one of the broken pieces of the knife. It's not a very deep cut, but it is enough to do what he wants. And he watches as the blood wells up from the wound, so dark as to be black, with golden shimmers running throughout it. And despite himself, he draws his breath in, but he doesn't say anything - just looks at it with a faintly unhappy expression on his face.]

Do you want to?

[ Because he could try helping. Who knows what's been done to Jamie's mind, but it's worth a go. ]

I hope so. Even if this was a better situation…

[it's weird not being able to figure out what they mean.]

A clue? [He tilts his head curiously.] To what?

[she stays close to him so she could support him if he needed it, but as it is, she doesn't interfere as he searches for his own balance. after all, it's the sort of treatment she knows she'd want in return. when he's ready, she nods] Where do you keep 'im, anyway? [because she's really not sure which of the Plane's buildings would be best for housing a ferret]

[Oliver's stomach drops. desperate to do something--anything--for Jamie, he says:] Here, hang on a tick. [and he disappears. when he returns to the Plane, it's not even a minute later, but he's standing now and holding a bandaid. he kneels again, reaching to wrap it around Jamie's finger if he'll let him]

[Does he want to know, really? It's likely not going to be a good memory, because he has the feeling that however he died, it wasn't in a peaceful way. He'd want to go down fighting. But the not knowing...it's like when the Time Lords took away his memories in the first place. He was so mad when he'd realized what had happened, because he'd not had a choice. Here he has that choice - and he decides he wants to know.]

Yes. I...think I do. D-do ye think ye can help me, Doctor?

[bonnypiperlad]

Aye. Chances are they'd mean something anyway. There's always something here.

[He sighs heavily, and reaches up to scratch at the back of his neck.]

I hope we are able to figure it out, though. I can't say as I care much for the idea of so many of us not remembering what happened like this.

I don't know. But it doesn't make sense for it to be around and not mean something, if ye ask me. Especially not since I'd woken up in that one lab-place. It's not as though those types of places have lots of knives just lying around for people to find.

[He appreciates her giving him the chance to find his own feet - and soon enough he seems fine, leading her through one of the paths towards where he'd set up a home for the ferret.]

Just over at the other end of the forest. I brought something in for him.

[Well, a few somethings, but most of them are in what appears to be a small outdoor enclosure that he's brought in and placed in a clearing - a place set up to be a ferret habitat, complete with food and watering stations and tubes and hammocks and multiple levels for Trouble to hang out in. That part of things looks perfectly fine - completely undisturbed. But not too far away is a large and noticeable discoloration, a patch of something on the ground that's darker than the vegetation around it. Jamie catches sight of it, and turns to grip at Menzies' sleeve.]

Here, do ye see that?!

[bonnypiperlad]

Wait, Ol...

[But he's gone before Jamie can finish, and back again just as quickly. Seeing his friend starting to kneel, he thinks about protesting that part of things too. But in the end he decides that maybe he could do with a bandage, and he lets Oliver wrap up the finger.]

You'd not needed to do that, ye know. It was just a wee nick.

[He considers silently for a moment.]

It sounds like there is something quite strange going on, certainly. But if you wouldn't mind, could you start from the start for me? I am quite new here, but perhaps a new perspective on your situation will shed light on something previously unnoticed.
