[Unsurprising, being whisked off somewhere new is somewhat disconcerting. Hawk ventures a couple of steps further onto the Plane, looking around, before offering any opinion on it.] So… a travelling shop, and this is… what, the destination? The point of origin? [the shop continues to not show up when he scans the area again, though, and he sucks his lip in, hands going to his sash.] It seems very eager to have taken off again. So… maybe not. Maybe it’s a common area, a stepping stage, that could make sense. But for what purpose?

…well, at least the floor stays where it ought. [He taps it with one foot a few times, and straightens up.] And it’s rather more spacious than where I was, that’s a point for it. [He relaxes, shoulders going down, elbows loose, lips quirking up.] May as well stretch my legs while I’m here. I’m not exactly in a hurry.

[Hawk turns and grins, lifting his hand in turn.]

No, not particularly! Though- [his eyes flick down for a moment] -is there a kitchen around here? I wouldn't mind getting a bite to eat.

Aye, there is. It's right over here. Not sure what's available right now, apart from the sandwich makings, but ye should be able to find something to suit.

[Assuming it hasn't switched around already, but he doesn't think that's the case.]

Say, I don't think I've seen ye around here before. [He offers out the same hand he used to wave, this time to shake if the other man wants to.] My name's Jamie.

[Hawk nods, looking over that way.] I'm sure I'll manage. Thanks.

Well, I've only just arrived, so it's only to be expected! [He reaches out to take Jamie's hand and shake it.] I'm Hawk. Pleased to meet you, Jamie.

Good to meet ye as well, Hawk. Although you'd be surprised at how long ye can go without meeting someone here. It's a big place, and since ye can go back home whenever ye like sometimes you'll not run into people for some time.

[He's fairly sure there's people here who've been here for awhile that he hasn't met, what with one thing or another. But since Hawk is new, he figures it can't hurt to offer some help, if the other man wants it.]

Have ye had a chance to get either of those brochure-things yet or would ye like me to fill ye in instead?

[His eyebrows arch up.] Is that right? How do you do that? [not that he's in a great hurry to return to the room in Rolante, but it can't hurt to know.]

Brochure-things? I didn't know there were any. If you don't mind! [He smiles brightly.]

Aye, there's two types at yon kiosk over there. [He waves in the general direction of it.]

They've both got some useful information, but ye...ah, may have to try and puzzle it out from what they've written down. Better if someone just tells ye about it, if ye ask me.

[And that is all the warning Hawk is going to get there, although he may apologize later if he finds out Hawk actually reads Nathan's brochure. It's...colorful, to say the least. But since he's here and the brochures are not, he's willing to give the information in person.]

Well, the first thing you'll need know is how to go home. All you've got to do is think about it, maybe take a wee step forward if that helps, and you're there. And to get back, you just think of coming back here.

[Hawk glances that way, then looks back to Jamie, smiling.] Sounds like it. Thanks.

Just like that? That… seems almost too easy. [Still. If he can return, and come back here just as easily, there's nothing much to lose, is there? He just needs to be quick, and he can be. He flashes Jamie a toothy grin.] All right. Back in a moment! [and he takes the first step forwards and vanishes, reappearing a few moments later and another step away.] …well! Handy if you wanted to get out of something, I imagine.

Aye, it's saved me a couple of times. [From what, he doesn't say. Instead, he nods towards the kitchen.]

Come on, let's go get ye something to eat. Unless you'd rather go back and get something from your world, that is. But if ye get it here you'll not have to worry about time going forward while ye do. When you're here, things back home'll stay the same...at least as far as you've not got someone fully merged with ye.

[He's not sure that it works quite the same when there's more than one person and one of them's on the Plane and the other one's back home.]

[He shakes his head, and laughs quietly.] No, here's fine. You mean to say nothing'll happen there until I get back? What do you mean by that? [He has mixed feelings about time not moving, but on the bright side, being away won't get noticed. That's not so bad. The second part sounds less good, though, and he looks concerned for a moment before smoothing it out and turning towards the kitchen.]

Mm. Better to discuss this on a full stomach, I'd say!

[Luckily, the kitchen is right there - almost literally - so it's only a very short walk back inside.]

Ah, the fridge is there, and the cupboards'll likely have something. I'd avoid the microwave-thing if you're not familiar with it. It's very easy to mess that up if you're not careful.

[He gestures at the little box with a bunch of buttons on it, but ignores it in favor of setting some water to boil on the stove, which he can at least use without too many problems.]

Now, where was I? Oh, right. So, yes, like I was saying, time doesn't go forward when you're here. It sort of stops. Which is good, if you're, say, in the middle of something that's bad. It'll give ye a chance to get around it.

[He nods, giving the box a curious look. Maybe someone else will know more about it.]

Mm, I'd think so. [He heads for one of the cupboards, finding half a loaf of bread and going to look for a plate.] Have you ever needed to do that?

[Quite a few people here do. Just not Jamie, alas.]

Aye, well, a few times. Depends on what's going on wherever we are.

[He moves over to the cupboard, pulling out a plate, which he offers over to Hawk, and a mug.]

Hey, did ye want some tea? The stronger stuff's over in the bar, I'm afraid.

Ah, so you travel, then?

Thanks. [He accepts both, and blinks for a moment, before smiling.] Sure. There's a bar? […well, why not, honestly.]

[Well, travel is one way to put it, that's for sure.]

Yes, I suppose we do. Although sometimes we wind up places we'd not meant to go. Our ship...well, let's just say that it has a mind of its own.

[He reaches up again to pull out a mug for himself, and a box of what appears to be a selection of teas, although there's some unusual ones in the mix, like banana and chocolate peanut butter cup.]

But aye, there's a bar. And a coliseum and one of those batting cage things. People've brought places from all over here.

Huh? You mean… it steers itself? [he doesn't quite understand that.

[He comes over to peer at them, picking out one of the chocolate peanut butter ones and sniffing it.] Huh. It stores some pretty unusual things here, doesn't it?

Good to know. Do they get much use? Brought them? [He sets the tea down again, frowning.] You mean along with them when they came here?

More like that the person who's doing the steering can't quite control it. Mind ye, he's gotten a wee bit better than he was when I first met him. That's a long story, though.

[And he might be confusing Hawk enough as it is, so he goes back to things that make...okay, maybe not more sense. But a different sort of sense.]

Both the kitchen and the bar do, aye. Although sometimes the selection changes, especially in here, and things that are there one time aren't when ye come back. Mind ye, there's a fair few people here, so it could just be that things are being eaten and stocked with something else.

If ye don't like anything here, though, ye can bring something else back with ye from home as long as you're holding on to it. Same goes with other objects, like desks or chests or even the buildings. At least, that's what I was told about the buildings. I never tried bringing something that large back myself.

That's something. Well… I'd be happy to hear it, if you're willing to tell it. [it makes a little more sense now, more or less.]

Huh… Is there someone who keeps an eye on the levels of food? Or does everyone do what they can?

[He nods. It's not as though he really has much he could bring, but it's good to know in case it does come up.] No… It seems like it should be a lot trickier. Nothing turns up by itself? [He pauses, rubbing his chin.] …if it's possible to bring things here, is it possible to keep them here, for storage?

[Maybe he will tell it sometime, at that. Right now, however, he's distracted by the sound of the kettle boiling, and he goes to remove it from the burner.]

Someone must do, but it's not any of us here. Both the places only seem to restock when no-one's about to notice. And as far as I know, the only thing that seems to turn up by itself are the people who come here, both us and the others.

And I don't see why ye couldn't keep things here for storage, but ye may want to let people know so they don't mistake your things for something from here.

[Hawk puts the things in his hands down for the moment, and picks out a can of tinned chicken from the cupboard. His nose wrinkles, but it can't be too bad, right?]

Huh… well, that's pretty convenient, then. How many people are there here?

[He nods, picking up a knife to cut off a couple of slices of bread.] It might help to label it, too, if I haven't met everyone before that.

Aye, well, that's hard to keep track of most times. People come and go here a lot, unless we've all been forced to stay on the Plane. But I'd say...

[He breaks off, both to pour the water for the tea, and to think a moment. After he's poured his tea, he holds out the kettle, an invitation to do the same for Hawk, then goes back to the question.]

Maybe thirty-five to forty? Give or take a few.

[He nods, picking up the mug and holding it out.]

Hm… it might take a little while, then. But that sounds manageable.

[He obligingly adds water to Hawk's mug as well, but the expression on his face isn't entirely happy. It has nothing to do with the tea, however.]

Aye. From time to time, we all get brought here by someone. Probably one of the people who run things. And then once we have, they throw something at us to see how we'll react. They like doing things like that to see what happens.

Doesn't sound too good. [he frowns, reaching out to pick a teabag] What kind of things have they thrown at you before?

Not exactly the best of hosts, then.

Aye, sometimes they're not. The last time we were brought here, we'd not been able to remember anything of ourselves, not even our names. And then things started to happen. Things began to follow ye, or sometimes if ye went certain places something would come to life...but it was all things that ye feared, somehow.

[He sets the kettle back onto the stove, but continues to explain, glancing back over his shoulder at Hawk as he does so.]

Other times there've been beasties, monsters. And sometimes there's experiments that'll happen even if not everyone is brought here for them.

As though they knew exactly what would set you off? [he taps his fingers against the mug, frown deepening.] At least they had the sense to return you to yourselves. Was there any sign when it began, or did it just start?

What happened in those cases? [he puts the mug to the side for the moment, going to finish making the sandwich.]
