What's all this then? It's pretty unexpected, I have to say. If this is what I've been missing out on, I'll have to start sneaking out of the Palace again.

Still, as nice as the scenery is, pulling people into Machines isn't something to be taken lightly. Grand experiments like this without the consent of the test subjects aren't something I can condone. I might have to talk to some people. Hopefully there aren’t any idiots I know getting themselves mixed up in anything they shouldn't be. It would be a hassle to have to clean up someone else's mess again.

So how about someone come out and tell me how to get out of this place? While the look of the place and the new surroundings are great, being trapped too long in one place would be annoying.

When they resurrected me, I noticed a change in my blood's physical appearance and metallic content. My fonon levels are mostly normal, but there's something unusual in the way I'm processing the First Fonon.

[Jade sighs and brushes his hair out of his face, an idle and uncontrolled gesture. He isn't comfortable with what has happened, but it is done with, and it is pointless to be disturbed by something that you can't change now.]

I don't know. That's one thing I'd like to ask them about. It wasn't fomicry, and I don't say that merely because I retain my memories. Based on the tests I did on myself, none of the alterations fit any possible models for fomicry. [Jade has enough trust in his own abilities to believe the results.] Other individuals have similarly died and been resurrected. It seems to be encouraged, in fact.

[he can't hide his annoyance at that. Jade isn't allowed to get himself killed.]

[We are not amused. He's annoyed enough that he's not up for dealing with Jade's lying, so he's just ignoring it for the time being]

And the side effects?

[Jade does not call Peony a grumpy old man, even if he is one.]

Aside from the changes to my blood and the discrepancies in processing the First Fonon, I haven't found anything. I can use artes based in the First Fonon as well as before, so I'll have to do further testing.

[relenting to Peony's seriousness] A group of people were selected to fights to the death. I didn't win.

[Jade is completely unashamed of this.]

[He's less grumpy when Jade relents, but he's still grumpy. He does not call Jade a reckless young man, even if he is one.]

[he sighs] Make sure the changes aren't anything that will be a problem in the future. I wouldn't want you finding new excuses to be lazy.

Were Luke, Tear or Asch in this group?

Fortunately, no. I was the only person from Auldrant brought to the battlefield.

That's a relief. One resurrected idiot is more than enough.

[He feels what he says is important. Not because it made a difference to Jade--a desire to survive was all Jade needed to be compelled to fight. But because it says something of the power of these people.]

The host of the battle threatened to destroy the universe of anyone who was chosen to fight and decided not to.

And you believe they really can do something like that?

[he nods, acknowledging Jade made the right choice]

Man, between how careless that Asch guy is and how dangerous the people bringing us here sound, it's going to be a hell of a lot of work keeping up with all these unpredictable forces.

Perhaps Your Majesty should stay out of trouble rather than add more work to it.

[Jade will be more than annoyed if Peony should die and need to be resurrected. And resurrection isn't a guarantee.]

I'd say I was dragged into trouble as soon as I walked into this place. But hey, you know better about these kind of things, I'm sure. So what would my most valued Colonel suggest I do about this situation?

Don't say disgusting things, Your Majesty. ['Most valued,' how rude] Stay out of trouble and call for my assistance if you come into trouble. I'll inquire around about fon machines that will allow us to keep in contact. Nephry would be so angry with me if something happened to you, and it would be more effort than it's worth to try to find a new Emperor.

Me? Find myself in trouble? As if I'd be so lucky.

But hey, don't worry so much. If you get the fon machine, I'll be sure to keep you on a tight leash. Who knows when I'll need to pull my vicious guard dog in to attack.
