[sitting at a desk in the middle of the Astral Plane, working on his paperwork like a good little nancy boy. And, like a good little nancy boy, he's listening to a broadway musical. On the glasses Fumie gave him, to be specific.

In fact, he's singing along to one. Yes indeed, Sam's singing "If You Were Gay."]

I am not -- [cuts herself off, glowering] You frustrate me, Sam Tyler.

I get that a lot.

Then why do you persist? What do you hope to gain from doing this?

The truth, I suppose.

The truth of what?

Any truth. Frustrating people isn't my purpose.

And yet you are so very good at doing it. [why yes, she's a hypocrite!] What is your purpose, Sam?

I could quote Avenue Q back at you in response, you know. I don't know. Narrow it down. What's my purpose in life? What's my purpose now? As a police officer? As a human being? I don't just have the one.

[frowns] What is your purpose in cofusing me? What is your purpose in talking with me as you are?

No purpose. I don't think, "Hey, let's confuse the TARDIS there!" I just talk the way - I'm... 'acting naturally,' I guess.

It is quite irksome. [tilts her head] What is your purpose as a police officer, then?

Protect and help innocent people, see the law upheld and justice served, do my duty to this city and country...

Do you enjoy that?

I do, very much.

You and the Doctor ... are similar in that regard, then. Is that why you like him?

No, well, maybe. It's why I get along with him, but that's something different.

Different in what way?

Getting along with someone tends to involve agreement, whether it's in ideals or agreeing to disagree. Liking someone ... can be entirely inexplicable, actually. More to do with personality - which is related to agreeableness, but not entirely. Things overlap.

And so you simply get along with the Doctor, then?

No. I like them, too.

Well. That is a good thing, then. [purses her lips] I think.

Why wouldn't it be?

I ... do not know. [thinks about this, trying to find the proper words] Having people who care for him has always made the Doctor happy, but I would be just as glad were it simply he and I. So it is good that you like him, because it brings him happiness, but it would also be just as well if you didn't. [frowns] Is that an acceptable answer?

It's an honest one, I think, even if it's not a very good one for social interaction.

I still find this whole concept of interaction difficult, Sam Tyler. I don't fully understand it yet.
