[sitting at a desk in the middle of the Astral Plane, working on his paperwork like a good little nancy boy. And, like a good little nancy boy, he's listening to a broadway musical. On the glasses Fumie gave him, to be specific.

In fact, he's singing along to one. Yes indeed, Sam's singing "If You Were Gay."]

[grimaces] There aren't enough hours in the day to do an entire department's paperwork on your own.

[looks at him curiously] Don't you have anyone to help you?

Most of my colleagues don't understand the importance of filling out the paperwork. So either they don't do it, or they do it sloppily, and I have to fix it up anyway.

Ouch! That must be rough for you.

Maybe if the Guv didn't let them slack off it wouldn't be so bad...

The Guv...? [Questioning look]

Oh, you're English. Am I right?

From Manchester, yeah. 'The Guv,' is, uh, in-office slang for the DCI. That's Detective Chief Inspector. Basically, the highest-ranking officer who actually does field work.

[Dino's first internal reaction: COP! CRAPCRAPCRAP. Then he realizes that Sam has no idea he's Mafia so he just keep smiling.] So you're a policeman! I had no idea there was so much paperwork in a job like that.

[unexpected!singing cop is always unexpected!] A Detective Inspector, yeah. And there's actually less paperwork now than there was before. After? Anyway, this is less than usual. It's just that I have to do it all.

[Yay, cop did not notice anything. Dino is still slightly wary though because, you know, mafia and law enforcement really don't mix.] If this is less than usual then I would hate to see what your paperwork is like when it's bad.

I hope your boss and everyone else appreciates what you're doing.

I would laugh at the thought if I found the situation laughable.

So it's a 'I do the thankless jobs because they have to be done', type of situation? You're a good person Sam.

Really? I could've sworn the word they use for it is 'anal retentive.'

You shouldn't be hard on yourself like that. You catch bad guys, don't you?

Sometimes. And sometimes they walk right out your front door, smiling and laughing, you and them knowing they got away with murder and there's nothing you can do to stop 'em hurting more innocents.

God, that's cynical. Sorry, I'm not usually like this. Well, maybe I am. But it's worse - paperwork isn't good for lifting anyone's mood.

[Dino is totally going to ignore the fact that he is technically a murder. Because, hey, he would never, ever hurt an innocent and he doesn't feel any sympathy for those that would.] What about the guys you do catch? They can't hurt anyone anymore.

Everyone gets moody when they have to do paperwork.

Those are the good days.

With very good reason.

But there are good days. That's worth something, isn't it? [Smiles]

Yeah, it is. Don't get me wrong. I love what I do. Couldn't imagine doing anything else. But some days...

You wonder why you even got out of bed that morning and start wondering what you were thinking when you decided to take this job?

Something like that, yeah. What do you do?

I work for the Health and Safety commission.

Health and Safety? God.

[Dino is amused by Sam's reaction]

You don't seem the sort, really. Sounds a bit... [waves a hand at Dino] Not like it matches.
