[ Seated on a blanket on the beach, looking out onto the dried up sea, was Haibara. It had taken some time for her to come to grips with herself after the death matches which was why she did not stay long when she had originally returned. But here she was, originally planning on a quiet hour or so of research while tending to the egg she had acquired.

Now, littering the ground beside her were fragments of what was once a whole tan and gold egg. And in her lap was a bright-eyed and coo-ing animal that left her rather speechless. It had it's paws on her chest and was currently nuzzling her cheek as the girl awkwardly stroked the creature on the head.

And for those beyond that glorious Fourth Wall, it would easy to identify the animal in question as an Eevee. ]

Some of the animals don't look like any I know. It might be normal for their world...

Hm. [ Rubbing the Eevee's ear again, she seems to be studying it. ] Well.... it is rather cute.

[He's silent for a bit, and then he smiles just a little.] That isn't a word I thought I'd hear you say.

[ At that she allows herself the smallest of smiles. ] I'm just full of surprises like that.

[He sits beside her, and the possums crawls around to be on the shoulder closest to Ai. Satoshi gives it another look, picks it up, and sets it on the ground on the far side. It responds by scrabbling up his arm again and sitting on his head.]

[Since he actually had a purpose in sitting, he opts to ignore it.] People who die here. Something about them changes. Do you know what it is for you?

[ With the grown-ups talking, her Eevee remains in her embrace as it rests both paws on her shoulder closest to Satoshi. Ears pressed to it's head, the little one sniffs in the direction of the possum. ]

[ There's a moment of hesitation. ] I may have a vague idea about it.

All right. [He won't ask if she doesn't want to tell. He just didn't want her to discover this by accident. And then, because he thinks she might want to know,] Alynn is back.

[ It was awkward, needless to say, when she had found it-- but it was something she wasn't ready to deal with right away. ] That's good.

I didn't find it. [Petting her Eevee on the head, hesitating again.] ...You won't believe me if I told you either.

[It does catch him off guard, but it also makes him curious.] How did you get access to a lab?

There is one where I live, provided for me by an acquaintance of mine.

[ Finding some comfort in the presence of the fur-ball on her lap, she looked out towards the barren seascape. ]

There were high expectations for me because of my parents. I was supposed to follow in their footsteps.

[Satoshi is almost amused by that, but his expression stays blank.] That can be a lot of trouble. [He puts his hands in his pockets, touches the edge of the cross there.] I guess I didn't mind Oliver University. But somehow, Azumano Middle School is more interesting to me.

It looks to be rather impressive for a middle school. At least, that's all I can tell based only on appearances alone. [She does smile just long enough to add:] But there I find myself enjoying the company of the students at Teitan over what ever other possible options that I could have.

[Hikari don't have friends, of course, but from Ai, the question brings a bit of amusement instead of the usual bland irritation.] That sounds like something Alynn would ask.

Is that so? [Her tone is some what light-hearted for a moment, but then again it could have been because her Eevee was nuzzling the palm of her hand.] From the few times we spoke, she reminded me of someone.

She's like a louder Niwa. [It feels very frighteningly true to him.]
