[Damon is on the Plane again, looking a little disheveled. That, combined with a fading bruise or two, might indicate to those in the know that he's just been harassed by certain members of the Chancellery Guard. He doesn't seem terribly bothered by it though. Actually, he appears to be working -- but he isn't. Instead, he's creating a few very tiny security cameras for his own purposes.]

I suppose this is what I get for working up the nerve to confront the Castellan. [sighs] At least I can have a few moments of peace here...perhaps I'll have a few more in the Citadel once I'm finished with these.

[his next words are rather bitter] Let's see how you enjoy being watched constantly, Commander Maxil.

[...that is so cute] Agreed. Now, about these cameras...

Hm? Oh, yes. They were the only thing I could think of to keep an eye on the Chancellery Guard, and they'll alert me when they're near the computer room. Fortunately I haven't had to worry about them at home, yet, but I may set something up there just in case.

Why do you need to worry about them? [raises eyebrows] Being too helpful?

[wry smile] That's exactly it, yes. They suspect I'll turn renegade like the Doctor, and I suppose this is their way of trying to keep me in line. [the "it's not working very well" is very strongly implied]

[returns it] Perfect way to turn you further away.

It is, isn't it? Though I'm not entirely sure I want to follow the Doctor's path yet. I enjoy life on Gallifrey, even if I have problems with certain aspects...but at the same time, I would like to see the universe. The things I could learn...

[he shakes his head, stopping that train of thought] I'm sorry, forgive my rambling. I don't think we've even been introduced properly.

You could never come back, afterwards? [...and then shakes her head] You're right. I'm Barbara.

...Do you shake hands, on Gallifrey?

[distantly] It would be very dangerous for me if I tried....but it's a pleasure, Barbara. I'm Damon.

[and then he's amused by her question] No, but I've known the Doctor long enough to understand the custom. [he offers Barbara his hand]

[accepts with a smile and a firm grip] Nice to meet you, Damon.

I suppose you couldn't sneak off without them knowing?

[he returns the firm grip himself, rather pleased he has an excuse for physical contact -- he's missed it, since Nyssa and the Doctor left. Well, the non-violent sort, anyway. He lets go a bit reluctantly.] To sneak off, I'd have to acquire something to travel with, like a TARDIS, or even a Time Ring. But to get my hands on anything of the sort, I'd have to steal it.

[there's that quiet resentment again] Time travel technology isn't available to everyone.

[Barbara notes that, filing it away for future reference] I can understand that in general, but you'd think a Time Lord would get to time travel when they wanted.

You would think so, yes, but there just aren't enough TARDISes to go around -- so there are rules and regulations about who gets to use them. Even the Doctor had to steal his.

[...smirk] Somehow, that doesn't surprise me. But why not make more of them?

It's complicated...they're not exactly a machine. They're sort of grown, rather than made. In fact, they're even sapient -- a TARDIS is alive, Barbara.

[her eyes widen at that, followed by a slow grin] That's amazing. I saw the Doctor working on a few bits and pieces, but... [yeah she really wants to get inside one of these]

[he matches that grin in a dorky fanboy fashion] The Doctor's TARDIS is beautiful. I've never had the pleasure of travelling in it, but I did get to see his latest interior recently. I also installed a new Type 40 time rotor for him -- he requested one without a recall circuit.

...I can see why. I'd think he'd have disabled that himself.

Which Doctor was that? The one I've met...short hair and big ears.

He probably would have, had Commander Maxil not removed the rotor from the TARDIS to begin with.

[frowns] That must be the Ninth incarnation Straxus mentioned. No, the one I know is blond, and he wears a human cricketing outfit. He's the Doctor's Fifth incarnation.

I meant...earlier.

[nods] He must be a while a head, then. ...I hope, anyway.

Oh. You know, I'm not certain why he never removed it. Probably because he wasn't ever called back that often.

...And I hope so too, I really do. Regeneration isn't an easy process. Of course, I've only done it once, but I hope my next regeneration is a long time from now.

So he was just hoping that continued? [just. shakes her head]

I wouldn't think so, considering you have to die for it. [wryly] And somehow I doubt he dies peacefully in his sleep.

I imagine so, yes.

[Damon's tone is wry, too] Considering the amount of trouble he gets into, I doubt he ever will.

[softly] That's the sort of thing you accept, with that kind of life.

[nods] Everything has a price...especially freedom. But I still envy him, despite what he goes through.

[faint smile, distant but warm] Especially if you use it to help people.

I'd think...you can only know if it's worth it if you experience it.
