[Gene appears, a sandwich stuffed into his mouth, a cig in his other hand. he may or may not have stolen said food from a suspect currently being held at CID. he'll never admit it if you ask, anyway. at any rate, he's grinning maniacally from behind his sammich] Gene Genie: 1. Scum: nicked.

...and that's supposed to mean what, exactly? Wait another two weeks and you'll magically decide hey, that shithole future is still just right for me?

[gives him a glare, but it softens] It means I can't go and I can't stay. It means I can't abandon my mum and I can't abandon you. It means I have people depending on me in 2006 and people people depending on me here. And that is, nearly verbatim, the speech the Twins gave me yesterday. Be as much of a bastard about it as you like, but I owe you the truth, so there it is: I haven't decided on anything. I can't, not yet.

[snorts] The freaks again? The hell you doing talking to them about this? [still, he nods faintly, shrugging a little, and takes a seat at the table, snubbing out his cigarette and pulling out another] So what, you can't decide now? Fine. Doesn't mean you'll choose the right one in the end.

They brought the subject up to me. They said... Forget it. [glances down at the floor] What's 'right' isn't always obvious. You know that. You reminded me.

Anyway, that's all I wanted to tell you. [and he opens the door to the Lost and Found to walk out]

Don't. [doesn't move, but his voice is commanding, stern -- but also lacking its usual harshness. he's saying it as a friend] What do they care about you choosing here or 'Hyde?'

[stops and turns back to Gene] They said they want me to be happy.

Ignoring the fact they're freaks and what they want doesn't matter, [a pause here, eyebrow quirk] what does?

What matters?

What makes you happy.

...Different things. All sorts of different things. In both places.

[nods, folding his arms over his chest and leaning back] Such as?

What do you want me to say? The sight of Sheriff Hunt, appearing to the sound of heroic background music, as he kicks down the door and saves the day? Or rather, violates half a dozen laws in an attempt to stop other people from breaking the law.

[walks over to stand at the side of the table] Or should I be waxing lyrical about Annie's chestnut brown hair in the flourescent office lights?

And then there's Portal.

You're a right bloody poofter, Tyler, you know that? [aaand takes the bait] The hell is Portal?

It's a game I downloaded off of my glasses. It came out the year after I went into a coma, so I'd never played it before, but one of the Doctors suggested it. And Bioshock. Do you know how hard it is to save the little girls without siding with the Nazis? But I don't know that you'd like either of them. ...Maybe Grand Theft Auto, though.

...the hell is a video game? And why would I like something that involves being a crook?

A video game is ... the evolved form of pong. 1973 has pong, doesn't it? I thought I saw it. And you'd like Grand Theft Auto because it's really all you would ever want in a video game. Gratuitous violence, sexual themes, getting to wave a gun around like a madman. You'd probably steal a police car.

Really? Don't get enough violence at work, Gladys? [ignore him, he likes the idea of gratuitous violence and sex]

[this grin is a grin of pure arrogance]

[glares grumpily] Yeah, well. Maybe. [expression sobers a bit] This your idea of happy, then?

[gives him a look] I could punch you, if you prefer.

Oh. It's one of the things, yeah.

[looks carefully at the table, leaving the (incredibly) sappy implication hanging in the air. Because Sam will never ever ever ever ever ever ever say 'You make me happy' to Gene Hunt of his own free will]
