seventy-two types of hissei

[Ahh, the most familiar sight on the Plane: a desk with paperwork. Such visions still haunt the nightmares of many.]

[This particular desk comes with a boy and his notebook leaning against it. He's still in his school uniform, but when is a Japanese manga teenager not?]

I'm taking a census on the natures of the worlds from which people here come, including any changes made to that world since an individual's arrival here. Any information would be helpful.

[He looks curious.] There's a few I can think of, one or two before your time. But I'm assuming you have something more specific in mind.

There was a cultural revolution in China, 1966, led by Mao Zedong. Great upheaval, nearly destroyed the economy, stopped education, hundreds of book and art burnings as well as destruction of historical buildings, rather 1984 sort of propaganda appears around this time...

The only other event that goes by that named happened in Iran during the 1980's, a sort of purging of Western culture in favour of Islamic ideals. It was more aimed at the education system, unlike the way China went about it. Those are the only two official ones, though naturally cultural purges are hardly unique.

What does Cultural Revolution mean to you?

I haven't heard of it. It might not have happened or I just haven't been around to see it. There's plenty I've missed in the universe.

I could check sometime, maybe. My, ah...well, the person I travel with isn't terribly fond of Earth. I love it, personally.

[He smiles a bit.]

Time machine, yes?

Oh, of course. Got all of that in mind, don't worry.

[The Doctor drums his fingers on the desk.]

Sooo, that all, then?

Well, a good 'how's the weather' is generally the accepted start. Though 'how are you' works well.

Right! Chit-chat, small talk, shooting the breeze, which is a very odd little saying, really, because there are few places where you could actually shoot the breeze. Unless you mean shooting a breeze...

[He pauses.] Right, well! Anyway, how are you?
