[The Doctor, after much waffling and distracting himself with other things, actually followed his self's advice, and took a trip to the Powell Estate to visit the Rose in his own universe. He'd even worked up the courage to knock on her door, until he heard a mewing noise behind him. And really, given the choice between another rejection, or a cute, fluffy kitten, it wasn't difficult for the Doctor to make a decision.

So he scooped up his new companion, and took him to the first place he thought of - the Plane. Where he is currently petting the little black furball. And talking to him, because cats are much easier to talk to than people.]

Someday, we'll find someone we won't have to ask twice. Maybe even a clever ape, if we're lucky. But for now it's just you, me, and the TARDIS! You'll love her, promise. Lots of room to run around in. [pauses] You need a name. Can't just call you "Cat," can I?

I know! Why don't you use the mothertongue's word for 'cat'? It will be a way to remember you planet and the amoral scientific genius you murdered, all in one phrase!

[because there's no guilt like "You killed the Rani" guilt? Or possibly he just thinks it's funny to name a cat in honour of the circumstances of the Rani's exile]

What is he doing? He is standing. Clearly this is very fascinating. But he has a dog at home, and it's a very treasured dog, even if he can't touch it, so he understands that intrinsic connection of animal + humans/Time Lords/other humanoid things = yay]

[Hello Lois! The Doctor glances up from said cat, who is still playing with his sonic screwdriver, and returns the smile] Yep, he's a he. And he's his own cat, really. Just happened to pick him up and rescue him from a boring life on the streets of London. [actually, he could have very well been someone else's cat that the Doctor may have stolen, because he certainly looks well-fed, but there wasn't a collar on him :|]

[the cat is pleased, and purrs happily] 'Course he's friendly. And er, no, he hasn't got a name yet. I've been asking around for suggestions...so far I've gotten "Cat," and "Mortimer." [and the Master's suggestion, but it doesn't count :|] What d'you think?

[Continues to rub behind his ear because isn't that just adorable!] My nan used to have cats. Thomas was one of them. I think that's a nice name for a cat. But I suppose I'm a little biased.

[D'awww. Adorable fuzzy animal! Dorothy is drawn like a moth to a flame. Only fire kills moths, and kittens don't kill Dorothies. Unless it's some sort of horrible space kitten, which, given who's holding it, is a viable possiblity.]

[and the kitty is not horrible or spacey. Well, spacey, maybe, but not...space-y. Yet. Instead he just purrs, and tries to lick Dorothy's fingers.] Haven't decided! So far it's a choice between Cat, Mortimer, and Thomas for names.

[Dorothy Has Dealt With Cats Before, and thus she allows the cat to sniff and lick her fingers as much as it pleases. With cats, the less you try to stop them from doing what they want, the more they'll love you.]

I had a barn cat named Frog once, because of how he pounced when he was a kitten. Looked just like a little frog! But this guy's not a frog, are you, kitty?

[She does not expect an answer from the cat. Most cats do not talk, unless they are from Oz, or have been to Oz, in which case, they might, if they feel like it. At any rate, she tickles the thing under the chin and around its cheeks, and tries not to melt into a puddle of animal-loving goo in front of the Doctor, as that would be rather undignified.]

I like Mortimer. Good name. Lots of character!
