I'm afraid I can't help you there - The Milo I am familiar with is quite a bit happier than this one, though I have a suspicion as to why.

The stairs aren't so bad when you get used to them.

It also gives us time to prepare. I consider myself lucky though - My temple is the first, so the stairs rarely bother me.

I've noticed that. I've been exploring; it looks like these stairs are the only way to really get anywhere. A good tactic if you're expecting a fight.

There's actually a way to climb past the stairs, but not past the roses.

No, not at all. That garden is sacred to Shaka. The roses I speak of are above Pisces temple - they litter the path to the grand pope's temple. They're quite deadly.
