[so Martha's imaginary birthday was yesterday! by which I mean the one that I completely made up, but still, I totally forgot about it. let's just say she went back to London and had drinks with her mum and Tish or something, IDK. THAT IS PROBABLY IRRELEVANT.

Except that it means that Martha is in a good mood here on the Plane! So not completely irrelevant, I suppose. She's brought one of her leather armchairs to the Plane and is sitting cross-legged in it, cradling a guitar in her lap. She fiddles with the tuning knobs for a few moments before strumming some chords. One chord progression leads into something that sounds rather song-like, but it's a song that nobody on the Plane is likely to recognise. She pulls a bit of a face once she realises what she's playing. She closes her eyes for a moment, pulling her hands away from the strings.

When she goes back to playing, it's a tune that might be a bit more familiar - "Hallelujah", that old Leonard Cohen/Rufus Wainwright/everybody else EVER standard, because the mun is uncreative. And, yes, she's singing along quietly - though she's a little self-conscious about her singing voice. BUT FEEL FREE TO PESTER HER.]

Well, I doubt they'd have approved of an eight-year-old attending. You start schooling young on Gallifrey.

Yeah, you've mentioned that before. [during Master storytiems! and that makes her fall silent again, running her fingertips over the strings of the guitar]

Have I? [of course he has, but he doesn't really want to acknowledge it]

The worst part is handling the naming system. You're named from your dormitory. Did you know there were five hundred eighty six Sigmas in my year? Ended up just going by "Theta". Significantly easier.

Theta Sigma? [eyebrow raise] Is that where she gets that from?

Cy. With the different nicknames for all of you. [Martha really needs to stop bringing up Cy around the Doctor]

[makes a face] I don't know where she learned it. But it's not a nickname I go by anymore.

Mm, yeah, she said you didn't like it. [not-so-secretly snickering]

[matter-of-factly] Not since I was 90.

So why the Doctor, then?

I like it, don't you? Simple, easy to remember, gets you the best seating at Martian Olympic parking registration...

[this is her unconvinced look] And it had nothing to do with, I dunno, how you wanted to live your life?

Well, if I wanted to do that, I'd be 'the Traveler'.

Which might've already been taken, actually.

Is that a normal Time Lord thing, choosing your own names?

Well, you choose who you are. Choose what you're going to do. It's only right you choose a title.

And you wanted to be a doctor.

Doctors help make people better.

[sarcastically] Do they really? I hadn't noticed!
