[Aniki, still a horse, appears on the plane. She's splattered with mud. Her mane and tail are tangled and thick with burrs; they're thick around her ankles as well. She stamps, trying and failing to dislodge some of the damn things. ]

[Anyone with mind-reading abilities can probably hear her swearing blue, red, green and purple streaks in several different languages.]

[EEE MUZZLEPATS FROM-- er. Wait. She shakes her head. {Forgive you for what, lad?}]

[He notices the way she looks and he shrugs.] Ah, well. I might have been overenthusiastic to help you. But everything is all right now. Though you've been getting food and everything, I hope.

[She bumps her head against his shoulder. {I'm sure you meant well.} She huffs in amusement. {Been eating well enough.} Not enough sugar cubes. Not any sugar cubes. Sigh. She walks a bit closer, enough to hang her head over his shoulder.]

[He gives an amused laugh, petting her muzzle absently.] Well that's good. All I had were sugar cubes, carrots and oats for you.

[EEEE MUZZLEPETTINGS AGAIN. They make her obscenely happy, which doesn't make sense to her, but she doesn't see the harm in it. {Sugar cubes. Like those.} ...sigh.]

[He doesn't know what she said but check out that stream they've reached.] All right, Aniki! Bath time! [He shrugs off his jacket and tosses it on a low hanging tree branch.] Let's get in, shall we?

[She sloshes into the stream. On an impulse she sucks in a mouth of water and spits it at him. {Come on, then.}]

[He holds up his arms to block the water and grins.] Oh, well, we can play that. ...Really need to wash you, first. Well! [He pops off the Plane, returning a moment later with a bucket and a scrub brush.]

[SHE RECOGNIZES THE BRUSH. Brushings feel good. She lips at his hair cheerfully.]

[He grins and gets the bucket filled, dumping it over her back. He repeats this process a few times before getting out the brush and starting to work it against her fur.]

How's that, Aniki?

[She whickers. {Yes, good.} She closes her eyes, sinking into enjoyment of the feel of the brush on her coat.]

[He smiles and continues to dump water over between brushings.] Blimey, you're filthy. Your mane and tail especially. We'll have to get those all off, won't we?

[And it's getting harder to ignore the overwhelming feeling of affection she has for him. She sighs, nuzzling at his neck, slightly hazy. {It's not so bad, really. The work. It... good. Make happy. Goddess says is bad, but feel right, like this.}]

[The Doctor begins to sing. Yes, he's singing. It's an older song, because the Doctor luvs the classic rock. And he continues to brush her, taking care around her mane as he uses his sonic screwdriver's super special awesome burr cutting setting.]

[Yes. Feels right, like this. And he's happy! That he's happy makes her happy. Her human consciousness is starting to drift again, disconnected from herself by the sound of his voice and the brush against her flanks.]

[He vaguely senses this but he's assuming it's just her relaxing, at present.] You know I've never washed a horse? But I've ridden them plenty. Oh I love horses. I usually name them Arthur. It's a good name for a horse, don't you think?

[Arthur... he's said that word several times. It must mean something important. She noses at the pocket of his pants, then starts snuffling at his shirt. Once again, the more he talks, the less she understands, listening to the cadence and tone of the words rather than the words themselves.]

[He just keeps talking, rather caught up in his task of grooming now.]

I'll tell you why it's 'Arthur', by the way. Most would assume King Arthur, wouldn't they? I quite like the connotations of it, so it's not bad. I actually nicked the idea from Arthur Hertzler, who was called the horse and buggy doctor. Also there's an Arthur here now! Arthur Eddington. Very nice man. See? All these wonderful 'Arthur' sorts and it just seems like a brilliant name. Especially for a horse.

[The words lose all meaning about half way through his speech. The only one she recognizrs without effort is Arthur. Yes, important word, that.]

[He gets all the burrs out of her mane and works on her tail.] Anyway, I have always liked horses. It might also be this regeneration. Horses don't pop up nearly as often as you might think. I almost kept one. His name was Arthur, obviously, and he was following me around on a space station. He was rather brave.

[Blah blah horses, blah, horses, blah. Blah blah blah 'Arthur' blah blah. She sidesteps nervously as he moves into her blind spot.]

[He finishes the burrs in her tail and cranes his neck around.] All right? Something wrong? Didn't hurt much, I hope.

[She turns around to snuffle at his hair--and then give him a shove with her nose to knock him over.]

[The Doctor stumbles back and his arm flails to catch his balance.] Oi! What was that for? I didn't hurt you! At least I think so.

[Her ears flick back, and then forward, her last human vestiges registering confusion. {Play?}]
