Mr. Tyler? I have something that would be in your interests to discuss.

[he doesn't bother looking up, as he is busy. though if anyone wishes to bother him, feel free. :|]

I know that, too. [shakes his head, pulling out a cig] Can't say I fancy the idea of having another Warren. He's as big a queer, though.

[gives him a very serious look, appraising, testing]
What do you suggest?

[he rubs along his wrist, slowly, coming to a stop]

If we - if I - accept this, then I'll be making a deal with your murderer. Ten months ago, he made me an offer and I turned it down without even considering. I knew what he was and I knew what I was. Cops don't make deals with criminals.

I can't do it, Guv. I can't keep this city safe through working with him.

[meets Gene's gaze, level and serious]

No one can.

[laughs quietly, sitting back in his chair]

No. I can't.

I called it off, Tyler. Or said I was gonna. I don't have any intention of staying under his thumb any longer, not after what he did to you.

[his tone says he very much knows his next statement is incorrect]

And he just accepted your resignation.

Yeah. Bought me chocolates and candies, too, gave me a nice retirement watch and everything.

What did he threaten? The city? People on the Plane? CID?

Doesn't matter. He'll keep using the threat and you'll never get out if you let him.

I know. Figured that out quick enough. Doesn't make it easier when he threatens to kill you and the rest of the team.

I know.

[doesn't respond for a long time]

What would you do, Tyler?

[that's his way of saying 'I need help']

We stand together and fight.

[doesn't reply at first, snuffing out his cig, then slams his hands down on his desk and stands]

All right. Then we need to get our asses moving. C'mon, Tyler. We've got some work to do.

Wait.

We can't run into this. We need time to get prepare. We need to train and brief our officers and we need to get in contact with our allies on the Plane. More importantly, I want to try to sever the merger between Manchester and the Master's planet before this. I think... I think, between the two of us, we could manage this in a month.

If you can keep the Master from attacking the city for that long, then we'll only have to fight him on the Plane.

And how do you propose I do that?

Do you think you can avoid breaking off the deal for one more month?

I can. I don't want to, but I can.

What've you got in mind for knocking that bastard out of our reality?

You're going to look at me and call it 'Age of Aquarius bollocks,' but it worked for Hei. We have to force it to break with our minds. Imagine a wall around Manchester, that's the best way to do it. It's psychic, so I can probably get something to amplify it from one of the Doctors or the Twins. It's a lot of effort but I know we can manage it. We should try to spend as little time with the Master as we can to help it reverse.

So let me get this straight. You want me to think the bastard away? 'cause I've been doing that for months and the pain in the ass hasn't gotten any lesser.

Guv, that was a complete merge of our realities. I've been willing it for months too. But not concentrated. Not like this. We need psychic amplifiers.

If it doesn't work by the end of the month, at least we'll have the city ready to fight him.

What do you want me to do?

We call in everyone we need to. RCS, plod, Ministry of Defence if we have to. Most of our officers don't have proper firearms training, and we need to fix that as quickly as possible. If we focus our defence on the perimeter, we can keep them out of the city. If at all possible, we'll call in MoD and have 'em bomb the hell out of that Cheetah camp. It may not keep the Master dead, but it will take out some of his allies. Donna suggested zoo keepers once, and she isn't all wrong; our men need to be briefed in how to handle the cheetahs as animals as well as warriors.

Consider it an invasion and a war. Every officer is to be armed, citizens are to be warned, and the Master's face should be everywhere. When people see him, they should be able to know him.

As well, we need to put out how to fight his hypnotism. Psychic resistance takes too much training. The best way to combat it without prior training is to recite nonsense lyrics and nursery rhymes, "I saw a man upon the stairs," and all that. It might not work if he brings 'em back some place, but it should give a delay needed to strike back or get away.

We've got the firearms in storage, left over from the war. [frowns, pulling out another cig] I'll have Phyllis call up the local animal control, see what they can do. I'd rather just shoot them all, personally.
