[Sam has his hands in his pockets, casually strolling about the Astral Plane. Is he a bit shaken up? Maybe, but he's doing his best not to show it]

'ey, Gene? What do you say to going to the pub? Could do with a Scotch myself.

And, uh, did I miss anything?

I fight you when I disagree, but that's not the same as---do you want me to say it? Do I have to say it? Fine! You're in charge, Guv! No matter how much I disagree and argue, no matter how much I give orders and command the rest of the team, and the end of the day, your word is law. You're the king of the bloody jungle. This is your team, not mine, and you're the one who has to lead them. Oh, and if we're being honest here, don't kid yourself. You're happy you finally have someone who's willing to stand up and disagree with you. The fact that I argue and am picky and don't just say, "Yes, Guv, as you like, Guv"? You like that. You need me as much as I need you.

[opens his mouth to reply, snaps it shut, opens it again. damnit, he hates it when Tyler's right, he hates it that he can't even win this small thing, he hates it that he needs to win this small thing and he hates it more that, when he looks at everything he's said, he's as much a coward as Sam says he is. because, when it gets right down to it? he doesn't want to face this, he doesn't want to deal with what he's done, with how weak he is. because Sam is right, Gene needs him, the same as he needs the rest of his team, perhaps moreso because he can't stand not having the challenge.

all of this works it's way through Gene's head, some registering, some not, and he's finally able to formulate a response. accompanied by a punch to the face]

Blow it out your arse, Tyler.

Eloquent as always, Guv. [and he happily punches back]

Sod off. [FIST FIGHT]

[and Sam, though he does fight back, backs down after a particularly painful hit courtesy of the Guv. Not because he's tired or weak or can't take it anymoe, but because this is the lightest hit he feels he can back down from without making himself look week or making Gene get angry about Sam acting hesitant. If the fight had continued, Sam's willing to bet it would end in Gene pinning him down somewhere, and he has no desire to show Gene how badly he's really dealing with this should that happen.

So he rubs at his jaw and gives Gene a sullen glare.]

Bastard. There are laws against workplace violence, you do know that, don't you?

[shakes his fist after said punch, because Sam's jaw is like a rock and that stung] Might matter if we were in the office, but we're not. Then again, I wouldn't much care. [pauses, glancing his DI over] Feeling better, Gladys?

Yeah.

Good. [grabs another cigarette] So. Pub?

... yeah. [nods and straightens out his jacket, buttoning it up with carefully steady hands]

[notices it, but says nothing, clasping Sam on the shoulder -- an action he's always done, something familiar, something that conveys his concern and understanding in a way that words never can] I'll save you a seat, then as I doubt you're wanting a ride.

[a sharp intake of breath, and then a nod] Thanks, Guv. [gives Gene's arm a friendly pat, and turns to leave, but then he stops and turns around again]

Guv...

[but he shakes his head, thinking better of it] See you there.

[is mildly intrigued to hear what Sam has to say, but doesn't push it, giving his DI a brief nod, instead] I'll let you pay for the first round. [and he drops off the level]
