[it's fortunate that Gene isn't looking, because the immediate fear that seizes up Sam certainly wouldn't make him feel any better. But Sam's very, very stubborn, so he attempts to act like all is normal] I don't whine.

[this would be Sam, feeling like crap] I didn't... I'm sorry. I'm really, really sorry. [takes a hesitant step towards her, and then pulls her into his arms] I should've been more careful. I'm sorry.

[nods, but when he speaks his voice is firm] Guv, we need to talk.
