[Sam has his hands in his pockets, casually strolling about the Astral Plane. Is he a bit shaken up? Maybe, but he's doing his best not to show it]

'ey, Gene? What do you say to going to the pub? Could do with a Scotch myself.

Thanks. [and Sam tries for a joking smile] Good to be among the living again.

Is it...safe for you to be around here now? Considering[Oh, how to say this delicately]...the person responsible is still...around?

[darkly] The person responsible was banged up for another murder. Gene made sure he didn't get away. Don't agree to fitting a victim up, but we could hardly get him on first degree when we had to lie to the team about why I went missing for a few days.

[Knows you're lying, Sam. But he decides to let it go.] Alright.

[Small smile.] Just be careful, okay? I don't need to tell you that there are dangerous people out there. And in here.

I know. The Master - Masters... How do you fight that? [runs a hand through his hair, spinning on his heel, until he remembers that he's, you know, talking to someone]

Sorry. How have... how have you been?

[And Hei is thinking, ah, the Masters--a clue!] They do seem rather powerful...[Pause, his expression growing somewhat dark but everything has a weakness.

[Smiling,] No problem. I've been alright, I suppose. Some things in my world have been going a bit wrong, but...well. What can you do?

I'll find it.

[frowns] What's been going wrong?

I'm willing to help you.

There's this...Gate in my world. It's not supposed to ever move, but a few days ago, it did. It only moved an inch, but...

Did anyone else notice?

[Smiles and nods.]

No, that's the strange thing. We all should have felt it move--I certainly did--but no one else even reacted.

That's... [runs his tongue under his teeth] There's a... a bit of the future in the middle of my city. But no one seems to notice a thing.

[Surprised.] A bit of the future? What year is your world usually in?

[erm, that's a more difficult question than it seems] T... Nineteen.... nineteen seventy-three.

Interesting. ...But then how do you know that one area is in the future? Flying cars and such? [Hei kind of fails at making jokes.]

The calendar is a bit of a giveaway. Mobile phones, satellite television, notebook computers and the internet...

I see. But...wait, how did you know what they were when you saw them?

I, uh... [erm...] I was... I lived there. I'm from there. Then. Manchester, 2006. I just... had an accident and wound up in Manchester, 1973.

Oh, I see! [Nothing sounds strange to Hei anymore.] An accident, though...[Smiles a little.] Sounds like you've had a hard time of it all around.

's not so bad. I get to relive my childhood! ... as a transfer from 'Hyde' serving under a loudmouthed bigot of a DCI, and without nearly as much treacle tart, but it's actually kinda fun, sometimes.

Heh. Well, it sounds like you like what you do, so...

[At the mention of Gene, Hei visibly stiffens.] Gene...you're friends with him, aren't you?

I do. Always wanted to be a copper.

[frowns at Hei's reaction] He wouldn't say as much, but... yeah. I... he's... my best mate, really.

[Smiles a little at that.]

I see. What [Looks away.]...what kind of person is he?

[glances at Hei, then away] Gene Hunt is a loud-mouthed, bigoted bastard. He's homophobic, sexist, racist, has a major superiority complex, is violent and agressive, shouts and smokes too much, and is borderline alcoholic. He has all the manners and sophisications of a particularly uncivillised boar and his capacity for shockingly crude similie knows no bounds.

I trust him with my life. He cares about people, and he loves his city and his team. He's intelligent and loyal, and he may have some... unethical interrogation methods, but he knows where to draw the line. He's a good cop, a good man. A great man. [gives a half-smile] And don't ever tell him I said that, or he'll never let me live it down.

[For awhile, Hei has no idea how to respond to this, and he finds himself thinking about Huang and Ms. Kirihara. And about Bai. He tries to remember the last time he trusted someone that completely. He doesn't think he ever did.]
