[Everyone missed the Doctor, right? Of course. But today is a bit different.

You see, he's talking to a plant. The plant is on a metal, rounded picnic table and he brought a tree that appears to be going through autumn and an area of grass with it from whatever planet he was on. But the important part is that he's sitting at the table with a sandwich, eating it and talking to this plant]

You know, you really are brilliant. ...No, really! I mean that. Sane, nice, loves Elvis. Also, you're not violent. You have no idea what a rarity that is these days.

[he shakes his head with a sigh and keeps munching on his sandwich and talking to the plant]

[Some of the flowers in the Gate talked. Or at least he thinks they did.]

I'm not entirely sure, actually. I don't think it does.

Oh. And here I was thinking it was some kind of alien talking plant.

Oh, I've met plenty of those, so you wouldn't be wrong in thinking it. This one I saw in a shop and decided to get. It was dying at the time, so it wasn't hard to talk off their hands.

Ah, so you saved it. That was nice of you.

But there really are sentient plants?

[smiles slightly] You should have seen me when I was younger. I used to sneak into labs and release the animals they wanted to test on.

But yes there are. There's actually a very nice race of humanoid trees. I've met a few of them.

I can imagine the mayhem that must have caused.

...Talking trees, huh. [He did see "that movie with the hobbits" so he's thinking of Ents.]

The best sort of mayhem, really.

They were brilliant trees, though. Never met any of them, eh?

Ah...I'm afraid not.

Ah, well, too bad. Maybe sometime I can give you one. Not sure if I can, really. Seeds of one, maybe? [scratches his head]

...You'd...give me a talking tree?

If you wanted one, I think I still have a trimming that a friend gave me. Her grandfather was just a tree, though. I think.

[BRB brainbreaking.]

[grins a bit] Or I could just get you a very nice, non-sentient sort of plant.

That...that might be better. At least then I wouldn't feel quite as guilty about killing it.

Not good with plants, I take it?

I've never really been good at keeping anything alive. [Blinks as he realizes what he just said. He looks away.] Um, I didn't mean it...quite that way...

[blinks as well] Oh, no, well. I'm terrible with things like...fish but I tend to have a bit of luck with plants.

That's good. Actually, well...I've never really had anything that needed me to keep it alive. Plants or animals or anything like that. [Well, there's all those PEOPLE WHO DIED ON HIM but yeah.]

I'm usually too busy for a pet like a dog or a cat. Not really overly fond of cats anyway and dogs, well, I do love dogs but they need a lot of care. Plants are a nice option, if you want to try.

Actually, I sort of have a cat now. By accident, really.

Oh, really? A cat?

Actually...he was my partner. He was a Contractor, a human who could possess animals, and somehow he ended up trapped inside a cat. But his human consciousness died. It's just the cat that's left now.

Oh...I'm sorry. You take care of him now?

I do. I didn't think I'd find him again, after he ran off.
