Big deal. Th' stars ain't no different back home 'cept they're closer here. An' you don't see the colors much but that's from being on the ground and the sky's too far from the ground. I guess there's a point to 'em, but I don' see it. I'm not into that romance stuff like Missy is t' see anythin' here.

So this part of th' machine, right? Th' reason why I got dragged back? Not that I'm complainin' 'bout that, I jus' gotta know, alright? So I'm not feelin' like ditchin' this place for somethin' a lot more entertaining than a bunch of stars. I've got things to do and people to get in touch with. I can't be messing 'round here all th' time.

[fills up their glasses and sets the bottle down and takes a seat as well]

I have no idea what's goin' on, Vash. All I know is that I was your guide, gettin' you t' where Knives was. Then Evergreen told me the orders changed I was t' kill ya. [mutters]Hell o' a choice, kill ya an' get richer than sin an' give it all up, or die there with ya.

[immediately gulps down a few swallows, coughing lightly from the burn]

Some of it sounds right, but the details are all wrong. You did guide me to Knives... and that didn't work out so well. I've never even heard the name 'Evergreen' before.

[gulps some down and sighs]

He's my... teacher's best word for it. I'd got his title an' all but he'd been Evergreen for years.

It was after I'd killed Zazie, 'member?

Okay look. There was the whole Fifth moon thing, right? Rai Dai bought it there. Then I found ya livin' with that kid an' her grandmother. Then you went an' got involved with a bunch of idiots on a sandsteamer that smashed inta satellite station an' then we visited your folks. I took out Gray an' you handled Gauntlett an' then I went after Puppetmaster.

Then we ran into those kids an' one was Zazie a kind of demon thing an' then we hit Carcasses an' Longshot targeted you an' I went after Evergreen.

[eyes him] Ain't that how it went?

... [rubs his forehead] No, that's not it.

After you found me, the sandsteamer thing happened, but then we ran into Rai-Dei. When we went to see the folks, I fought... Leonof. That Gauntlet guy didn't show up until after that, when Zazie kidnapped Meryl and we went to save her!

I'm not sure exactly when Zazie died, but it was after you were already dead.

[just stares then tosses back his drink and pours them both another stiff one] ...Shit. I don' 'member it that way. What th' hell's goin' on?

[digs out another smoke but only plays with it]

I remember th' short girl an' her friend. I know she'd crushed you big time an' Milly tried t' keep me together after I shot Zazie. Dammit! There weren't any kidnapping. They weren't important enough for that blue haired bastard!

[... stares at him in complete disbelief before shaking his head]

It wasn't him that did the kidnapping, it was Zazie. ... It doesn't matter. Some things might be similar, but other than that it's like you're from somewhere else entirely. You don't even know who Livio is, do you?

[sighs and shakes his head, a rueful half-smile crossing his face]

I guess it don' matter at all. No, I don' know that name so I guess I ain't the guy you've want to talk to, right?

[slightly sheepish look, takes a sip of his whiskey before replying]

That's not it. I'm sorry about what I said earlier. I thought you were the Wolfwood I know.

[snorts and then decides to light up and inhale]

Right. So, that means you ain't the broomheaded idiot that I know. Damn. An' here I was gonna smack him.

[... wincing even as he's smiling]

What'd he do to deserve that?

Because he does. [eyes Vash and take a sip of whiskey] He always pisses me off. He's one of the few people that can.

[nearly muttering it] It doesn't seem all that hard...

[and there is the Wolfwood glare-o'-death] Whadda mean it ain't that hard? Do you know what I am? Who I am? I've been doin' this for so fuckin' long I can't 'member the last anyone but him - you - got me mad!

[raises his hands placatingly, still holding onto his glass]

[still eyes him like he expects something more from him]

Yeah... guess I do. You should see Carcasses. They're rebuilding it. An' the bandits are gettin' more an' more respectable.

That's funny, I am staying in Karkassas. [pronouncing it differently? sure.] There wasn't anything to rebuild...

[eyes him] Not Karkassas, Carcasses. An' it was all blown to shit an' back 'fore I died.

[snorts and leans back in his invisible chair]

Probably the same town but not jus' like I'm the same Wolfwood but not an' you're the same Stampede but not.

[brow furrowing] I wish I knew how this was possible. If this isn't a trick, then there's a whole other No Man's Land out there...
