[Misaki, in sweats with a massive punching bag. She has gloves on and is whaling away at it, and from the coating of sweat shining on her face it looks like she's been at it a while. Her hair is damp and starting to come loose from her ponytail. She strikes the bag once more, setting it swinging, and then pauses to shed the gloves and stretch a bit. She takes a drink from the water bottle near the bag's base, tugs the gloves back on and resumes.]

I think I've heard you mention her before, but I can't be sure. Old friend, then?

Oldest friend. [She smiles as she cracks another ball into the net.] Got me in so much trouble when we were young.

Tell me a story?

[She falters, missing the next ball as she remember the last time someone asked her to do that. She steadies herself and tries again, and hits the next one, though not as well as before.

The skinny-dipping story pops into her head, and she bites back a grin and decides to save that one for.. well... never.]

There was the time with Alice, when we kidnapped her from her body guards for a day at Yomiuri Land. She'd never been to a water park. [She facepalms a little bit, grinning.]

You kidnapped a copper from her own body guards? Swell copper, you are.

[baseball bad SWING]

No, we... [Trying to hide the grin behind her hand.] It was in high school. We kidnapped a mobster's daughter from her own body guards.

You what?

[Giggling again now.] Alice Qinlongtang. We met her in high school--she was a classmate of mine. Daughter of one of the most powerful Chinese mafia families in Japan.

And you kidnapped her.

We did. [Grinning and not looking at him~ She cracks at another ball and realizes her machine is empty.] I thought we were going to die when they finally tracked us down.

Tell me again how you've managed to make it as a copper? [but he's teasing~]

[Heh.] Luck. Lots and lots of luck.

[Fetches another bucket of balls and then just sort of leans on the machine after dumping them in, a thoughtful look on her face.] We fell out of touch after high school. Alice and me, I mean. She went abroad and I went to Kyoto University with Kanami.

Do you know... if she's all right?

[...doh. AND THEY WERE SO EMO-FREE UNTIL NOW.]

...she's dead, actually.

[STOP!

[lowers the bat and looks over at her]

[Leaning her head against the machine.] She went insane. Ended up as my case, ironically enough. She'd started killing her own family's men--she never wanted to be part of it, not really.

[and if losing a friend isn't bad enough, that friend dying on your case makes it worse. Sam listens, because listening is good and doesn't know what to say]

[FFFF THIS CASE keeps coming back to haunt her. For obvious reasons I guess. :| ]

She was... There was a drug, a byproduct of some flowers from the Gate. She didn't care about anything when it was in her system. Anything but... well. It doesn't matter. She died--her own assassin killed her. [She shakes her head and pushes away from the machine.]

[there's not any consolation he can give and he knows it, but he walks over to her anway] Not your fault, you know that.

[Have a tired smile, Sam.] I do. But it's one of those, you know? Where you go back and forth and over it and over it trying to figure out what you might have done differently. Only I can go back all the way to high school.

[nods; he understands. Again with the Not Having Words, though. She gets shoulder pat of manly comfort, though]

[She is amused by the pat of manly comfort and its awkwardness.] Like baseball?

...what? Oh! Oh, yeah. More of a footballer at heart. Football football, that is, not American football.

[Amused.] I knew which kind you meant. I think Americans are the only ones who think American football is football.

I always thought Japan got everything Western straight from America's hands.

Do you play football?
