[Misaki, in sweats with a massive punching bag. She has gloves on and is whaling away at it, and from the coating of sweat shining on her face it looks like she's been at it a while. Her hair is damp and starting to come loose from her ponytail. She strikes the bag once more, setting it swinging, and then pauses to shed the gloves and stretch a bit. She takes a drink from the water bottle near the bag's base, tugs the gloves back on and resumes.]

Okay, fine. Sam is an emotional idiot and tries not to emo on the outside, and therefore doesn't like letting his emotions out this openly.]

[NO INDEED. SAM IS A MANLY MAN. Or at least she'll let him keep up the illusion. She lets go.] I never knew my mother.

[She clasps her hands behind her back and looks at some spot over his head as she says it.] She left my father with me when I was born. He never talks about her. All I know is he came to take us home from the hospital and she was gone.

[She drops the football and kicks it at him lightly.] Don't be. My father and I have had a good life together.

[kicks it back at THAT MANLY MISAKI, THOUGH SHE IS DEFINITELY A 'HER'] I ended up with a lot of women. There were always women around the house after dad left.

[And she returns it once again TO THAT WOMANLY SAM, THOUGH HE'S PROBABLY A 'HIM'. She grins.] I spent a lot of time at Kanami's house, with her and her brothers. They always had family over, too. My father... He was at work a lot--a cop is a cop.

And... well. Abandoned children in Japan are... unlucky isn't the right word, exactly. Ill-fated, maybe. My father and I... It wasn't as though we made a promise. But we did everything we could, worked as hard as we could--we forced them to acknowledge us. It wasn't as bad, honestly, once the Gates showed up. People had better things to worry about.

Well, there was Auntie Heather. Probably around most, always helping me and mum out. I, uh, saw her in '73. She didn't recognise me. [shaking it off] But she was strong. Fought for us, stood up and didn't let anyone walk all over mum. Chased off a lot of men looking at my mum, to. And there was my grandmum on my mother's side, grandpa'd died by then. Always had a treat, that I remember most. Mum had a lot of friends about - Tracy, Susan, uhm... I think there was a Michelle. I was doted upon. 'cept by Auntie Heather, who thought it wasn't good for me to be around so many women.

[She laughs.] It's like we're mirror images, almost. Except for the time travel bit. [Bounces the ball experimentally on her knee.]

And the Gate. [watches her experimenting appreciatively!]
