[There have been many times in Jamie's life where he's not understood what's going on, usually when there's a name or a word or an idea that's far past his time. Usually he figures out some way to get through, either by questions or by pretending he has a clue. It's worked well enough for him before.

Today, however, it's more difficult to do that, thanks to the very large blank in his memory. It would possibly be frustrating if he wasn't still somewhat disorientated by what had happened, but mostly right now he feels strange, in a bit of a daze that makes thinking difficult. In an effort to try and clear the fog around his head, he starts to wander the Plane with no clear destination in mind. Eventually, he finds himself over by the forest, with a strong urge to sit which he doesn't bother to try and fight, instead settling under a large tree and unwrapping a bundle that he's been carrying with him. In the bundle is a broken hunting knife, which he stares down at like he's expecting it to give him some answers. It doesn't really seem to be cooperating, though, and after a moment he sighs, shaking his head even as he continues to look at the object in his hand.]

Och, I wish I knew what was going on.

Ah, no. I guess I missed ferrets hatching from eggs. [she gives a wry sort of smile, but the joke is rather flat]

Did he? [she frowns. she knows that Ray can't stand to be around anything supernatural, and she wonders if in this case it's just because Jamie has died or if something else about him has changed. but she nods at his question] Yeah, they both did.

Jamie... [she pauses, not sure how to approach this, but she has a feeling it's better to ask than to tell in this situation] What do you think happened to you?

What? [Oliver tries to catch Jamie's eye, though he's not sure he really wants a dose of what Jamie is feeling. still, he's hoping it will be a start toward a real answer at least] What do you mean? That knife... [he trails off, chewing his lip uncertainly. he doesn't like the look of this--not one bit]

If they are, they'd likely not say anyway.

[He's a firm believer in the fact not too many of the people who would work here would give out much information at all - at least not easily. But he gives another shake of his head at the question, not to focus this time, but simply to say no.]

No, mine's still where it always was.

[He turns back the corner of the coat to show the dagger in its sheath at his waist, then offers out the broken knife to Hawk.]

Here, ye can take a look if ye like. Maybe you'll have more luck at figuring out something than I have.

[Maybe it's a little bit of both. Jamie's never bothered asking. But he does have his own suspicions on what might have happened to cause Ray to act that way - and the fact that he'd woken up on the table is a pretty large red flag to him as well. So he lifts his head to look at Menzies more directly, his lips pressing together in an unhappy sort of way.]

I think I died. And...and that's why I woke up where I did.

[There's maybe a tiny part of Jamie that's not altogether ungrateful for the coming back part, especially since it means they wouldn't be having this conversation otherwise. But he licks his lips, because he's not sure if the Doctor's even going to believe this next part.]

Well...as far as I know, ye have a chance of coming back with some sort of-of power. Like those superheros in those comic-y book things.

[Well, that and all the other strange things he's seen during his life, really. But this place definitely has its fair share of strange things, that's for sure. People visiting Scotland to see their uncles aren't so much in his book, but it still sparks his interest, causing him to be able to shake off some of the vague wooziness he's still feeling.]

Oh! Aye, it's a grand place. What did ye think of it?

[It's not hard to do that, not when he looks directly at Oliver. Mostly what Jamie is feeling is confusion, and maybe a bit of dizziness from whatever drugs they'd put in him. But there's something else, too, deep down, a sort of suspicion that's in the back of his mind and hasn't come out yet.]

It's not mine, see?

[Turning his jacket back, he shows Oliver his dirk, still firmly in its usual place, then lets it fall back into place.]

I...I found it next to me when I woke up on the table.

Thanks. [He reaches out to take it, turning the knife over to examine it.] I don't know, though… I can't say I could make much sense of the other items people were left with. They must fit in somehow, but… [he shakes his head]

[Jamie leans his head back against the tree, closing his eyes for a moment - only for them to pop open almost immediately afterward. Quickly, he sits forward, only to cringe a little and bring his hand to his head.]

Ooh. Items, though, ye said. What sorts of items were they?

Don't be ridiculous.

[Canada doesn't know the half of it.]

[Canada grins a little. Scotland is a hot-headed and slightly crazy guy, but rather affectionate and loyal in just the right amounts for an uncle.]

It is indeed grand. I particularly like the natural beauty of the landscape. I've enjoyed my visits there very much.

Annabeth. ( she nodded, giving him a smile. but her eyes lower to the knife again and she wonders, like him, what reason he had to have it with him if it's not his )

Wait, here? ( after a beat, she realizes what he's said and arches a brow ) Do you mean that you haven't any idea why you're in the woods at all?

Ah, let me see… [He taps his fingers against his knee.] A… baseball, a walking stick, and… a box of matches. With an address, in somewhere called… San Fransisco? Do you know it?

No, it's true.

[He's quite serious about this, actually, and the look on his face reflects that.]

Oliver wound up with this sort of...empathy power. He can tell what you're feeling if he looks at you, so long as ye look back. I'd not have believed it if the Plane'd not mixed things up and I wound up with it for a wee bit.

I'm glad ye have.

[Which is true, but there's something a little wistful that creeps into his expression all the same.]

Don't get back there as much as I like nowadays, but...och, listen to me. Look, I don't want to talk your ear off about it. Would ye mind giving me a hand up, though? Least I can do is talk with ye while standing up.

No, that's not it. Sorry, I'm a bit...well.

[There's a brief shrug from him, because he suspects he's still out of it enough that most people'd be able to see.]

I know why I'm sitting here. I came out on purpose once I'd woken up and found that knife next to me. And I remember coming to the Plane, but it's the part after that and when I'd woken up on the table I don't remember.

San Fransisco? Aye, someone mentioned something about it once. It's a city on Earth.

[Just don't ask him where it's located, because he has no clue.]

But what's matches got to do with a baseball, a walking stick and that knife?

[He smiles apologetically.] Sorry, didn't mean to make you nostalgic.

But certainly. Here. [He stands and offers his hand to help Jamie to his feet.]
Not that I mind sitting in the grass. But if I may ask, what were you doing sitting out here with a knife like that? [He nods in the direction of the broken knife.]

[ He really doesn't make it a habit of doubting Jamie but this... is really difficult to imagine. ]

Do these abilities work outside the Plane?

[Oliver closes his eyes briefly because that deep, dark suspicion is something he was already feeling, and having it magnified just makes it worse. he bites his lip as he looks at his friend again] Jamie...

[at the comment about the table, he instinctively reaches out to put a hand on Jamie's shoulder. he's quiet for a second before he chokes out:] You mean...in the lab? You mean that you... [he trails off again, watching Jamie intently. he knows his friend is probably about to confirm his suspicions, but he's still hoping against hope that Jamie will have a different explanation]

[she nods, glad to see that he's acknowledged that much] I'm sorry.

[more brusquely, she adds:] But if somebody's going about the Plane killing people, then we've got to work out who and put an end to it. [she pulls out her mobile, setting the knife on the ground in front of her as she snaps a photo of it. then she turns her attention back to Jamie] Look... I'm sure it's not easy. But is there anything else you can tell me? Anything you remember about what happened? Or even anything you know about this. [she gestures at the knife. putting her mobile back in her pocket, she picks it up, offering it back to him]

On Earth… well, that's a help. Do you remember who mentioned it?

Well… I'd thought they were probably related to whoever's behind this.

No, it's alright.

[He takes the hand gratefully, because even if he doesn't want to admit it, he's still more than a bit wobbly. And that oh-so-casual leaning against the tree afterward has more than one reason behind it - like allowing him to take another look at the knife while trying not to fall over.]

Trying to figure out where it came from, mostly. I'd woken up with it next to me earlier on.

[Honestly, Jamie didn't believe it either, not until he'd run into a few people with powers.]

Aye, as far as I know, they do.

[Oliver's do, at any rate, and he believes the same holds true for everyone else.]

Look, I know it sounds daft, Doctor, but if I've gotten one than it's better ye know now, in case it's something I can't control.
