[When Wash appears on the Plane somewhere near the coliseum, he has a different-looking helmet tucked under his arm, and a pensive expression on behind his own. It's been a while since he's been to the Plane, but then again, things have been heating up back home. A lot going on these days.

Connie's words--no, she doesn't want to be called that anymore--CT's words are still going through his mind. Why should he pick a side? They're all pretty much friends, with varying degrees of the term "friends". But there is that whole thing about the Director and the like...]

[Originally, he had intended on heading to the kitchen to grab a bite to eat and mull things over some more, but his feet are taking him closer to the coliseum instead...]

[ooc: Continuing the Freelancers canon bumps to S9x07 "Case File 01.045"! And poor Wash is under the influence of the gas from the coliseum, but thankfully, his emotions are just on the contemplative side--at least currently. For someone who usually keeps a lot of feelings to himself, this will rapidly change depending on the course of conversation.]

[Doc comes up behind him cheerfully. did you miss him, Wash?] Hey, it's you! [he jogs over toward him--but when he spots CT's helmet, he stops where he is] Um. If you're doing a trophy thing? I just want you to know purple would really clash with the whole...brown and yellow thing.

[Surprised, Wash spins around and blurts out:] Oh god, it's you! [...Yeah, he didn't mean to say it exactly like that; it just...came out.]

I really don't get you, man. Why would you think this is a trophy? It's my friend's helmet. She left it with me. [Tucks it under his other arm a bit protectively.] And what does purple have to do with it?

[Doc is unfazed by the insult] Yeah, I already said that.

[he is, however, surprised by that statement] As in, left it with you while she's still alive? Not when you horribly murdered her? Wow.

[shrilly] Oh, nothing! Purple's just...not a good color for mantels. It clashes. Um. In case you were wondering. Or planning anything.

[He snaps testily] Why would I kill Connie? She's my friend! [Then it dawns on him and he groans--but can't help feel a bit...panicked, oddly enough. Doc's always been talking about stuff that's going on in the future and he typically doesn't listen to him (or rather, takes it all with a grain of salt because let's face it, being told you're going to kidnap someone like this medic makes you wonder how sane your future self is.)] Wait a minute, she's dead? How? What happened?

I'm not planning anything! I'm just holding on to it for her! [He's still pretty protective about it--and even moreso after hearing what Doc just said about her being gone.]

[without thinking, he snaps back:] I don't know! I don't stop psychopaths to ask! [he pauses] I mean, unless they're in a therapy session? But they're hard to get to come to therapy.

[he considers that question, giving Wash a dubious look] Um...is there an answer I can give that won't make me next? Because whatever that is, that's the answer.

[after glancing from the helmet to Wash again a few more times, he admits:] Yeah, I don't get it.

[He stares, stunned, at Doc for a second.] ...Do you think I'm a psychopath? Is that what you're trying to say?

[That's really all he's gotten out of this entire conversation.]

Um, yeah. [he blinks at Wash because he really thought that was obvious. but since Wash is asking, he figures he'll explain. after all, he feels like talking today. and talking can't hurt, right?] I mean, you killed Donut! When you think about it, out of all the guys, he wasn't really the best choice. Oh, and you hang out with the Meta. I don't know if you've noticed, but he doesn't really have friends--probably because he's killed them all. So, yeah, definitely a psychopath.

Well. [That's a load of bullshit. Why would he kill a pastry? And why is he obsessed with this Meta thing and its supposed relation to him?/s] Good thing you've finally said that. And you know what I can say about you, Doc? [He starts walking towards him.]

Uh, definitely not that I'm next. Definitely...something that isn't that. [Doc starts walking backwards nervously]

[And he continues walking towards him and laughs.] Yeah, no. You're not next because I haven't killed my friend or anything! But you, Doc, are completely and utterly insane! I don't know what you have against me, or why you continue to believe in this delusion of yours that I am going to hurt you, but I'm not. We've met how many times now and you're still fine? [That's a rhetorical question, don't answer that.] And believe it or not, I'm not going to start hurting you now!

Yeah, okay, um. I think I'm going to go...do some yoga now. Or just sink into the sand. It's good cardio!

[and unless Wash convinces him otherwise, he is very much about to drop from the Plane]

Hold on, that's it? Are you kidding me? [His arm goes up then back down in a gesture of disbelief.] You're going to run away just like that even after I said you're okay to be around me?

Yeah. Uh, next time you want to convince somebody you're not going to kill them? You should try to sound less threatening about it. And look less scary. So, yeah, I'll see you...some other day. Maybe. Bye! [and Doc drops from the Plane]

[that's an awful lot of armour. And an extra helmet? Odd…]

Expecting trouble?

Hmm? [Yeah, his mind had wandered elsewhere.] No, this is a friend's, and--[He stops, staring at this stranger's hair color.]--no way that's natural.

A friend's?

[He raises his eyebrows, surprised but not particularly offended.] I can't remember ever waking up with it any other colour, though.

[He nods, shifting the helmet in his hands.] Yeah, she got frustrated about something back home and shoved it at me. [He frowns behind his own helmet.] Not even sure why she did.

Really? And that's...everywhere? [But as soon as he says it, he starts stammering.] U-uh, sorry, I didn't--I didn't mean to ask that.

Huh. That sounds unusual… [He leans in slightly, peering at the helmet.] Maybe she wanted whoever was frustrating her to see it?

[Hawk pauses for a moment, staring, then snorts and brings a hand up to try to stifle any further snickering.] You won't know if you don't ask, though! So it's not a natural colour where you're from?

Yeah, I don't know about that. I was trying to help--oh. [His expression falls as he looks over the face of her helmet.] Maybe I wasn't helping as much as I hoped. [He still isn't too sure about that talk about picking sides still either.]

[Wash shakes his head.] Not at all. We have the standard hair colors and that's it. Plenty of hair dyes, though! [Not that he's ever colored his hair before.]

[he shrugs, head to one side, eyebrows raised.] Maybe not. What was it all about?

[that gets a snort, and Hawk gestures at his own head with a quick smile] Apparently it's not standard everywhere, though! Which ones do you mean? Have you ever thought about trying one, then?

[Normally he doesn't talk about the things that bother him, or are personal, but he can't exactly stop himself from talking right then.] She was just upset about the mission we were on. Things didn't go well and she took it personally. But then...she started going on about how lines were being drawn between us all and the higher-ups... I don't know. It's kind of a mess.

Uh, all colors. I mean, the regular blond, brunette, red head, and black hair stuff is normal where I'm from. But if we want anything else, we have to dye it and...I don't really do that. It's not regulation.

[he listens, nodding.] It sounds like it. And that… [he frowns.] There does… tend to be that division, unfortunately… but if they don't care about the people they command, then I don't think they're a truly good leader. Maybe that's influenced her, maybe not. But if she's feeling that way… it could be justified.

[he nods.] Can't exactly keep your helmet on at all times, right?

[He sighs, hanging his head. He can't help feeling there may be some truth in that, but he's always had complete faith in the Director.] Maybe... I'll have to talk to her about it more when she's had a chance to cool down.

Um, well, technically no. [He fiddles with CT's helmet in his hand again.] But I'm trying to figure out how I can! It's just taking a while to. The food and drink intake system aren't quite ready for us to keep them on so we're ready to go on a moment's notice.

[he nods] Better to have more idea of what the picture is from her point of view.

…what? You mean you'd want to? [he stares, mouth slightly open, not entirely comprehending that.] How… would that work?

Yeah... [But the question is, does he want to see it from her point of view? ...He'll cross that bridge when he comes to it.]

Of course! Why not? Do you know how much more efficient I'd be in my day-to-day tasks? [If he sounds excitable about this, it's because he is. He thinks it'd be the coolest thing in the world.] I'm not really sure how it'd work; I just know it'd make everything so much easier.

Er, no, and I'm pretty happy that way. [Hawk is rather less than convinced of the coolness of it.] I suppose, but it sounds like you'd be fairly cut off from the world around you.

[Wash shakes his head] No, not at all! My armor helps me monitor everything in my surroundings. I can see if there is any movement around me in a 25 foot radius, or less or more if I want to change it. My helmet can even zoom in and everything!

… It's still between you and whatever you're looking at. I suppose it's good for pciking up anything coming at you, though.

It is! And I don't mind having it on. It's meant to protect my head. [He uses a knuckle to knock against his helmet.]

Hey, what's your name?

That is what they're for, yes. [he gives Wash a considering look, head tilted.] Does that mean you're always in danger, then?

Hawk. What's yours?

Not always, but it's there. [He shrugs his shoulders] We're just preparing for that eventuality.

[He moves the helmet over to his left arm, holding out his right hand] Agent Washington, but a lot of people call me Wash.

Ah. [well, then, it makes a little more sense. He supposes.] How bad is it now?

So should I call you Wash, then? [he smiles, a little teasingly, and takes Wash's hand to shake.] Nice to meet you.

Well, we've kinda been at war all my life. That bad. [He's actually pretty nonchalant about it. It's all he's ever known.]

Yeah sure! Good to meet you too, Hawk. Were you named after the bird or something?

…shit. That's… how do you cope? [he can't quite imagine it. Things have only just started getting bad- he doesn't like the thought of what it would be like being born into it.]

Do you know, I'm not quite sure! I'm fairly sure being named after the bird is more likely than anything else, though. I… One of my friends was named Eagle, in fact. It might just have been a thing around that time.

[He isn't really sure how to answer that.] Um, I just...continue doing what I normally do, I guess.

Eagle and Hawk, huh? Maybe it was a trend. Some of my ancestors were named after the celebrities and fictional characters of their time. [He's kind of made a point to not read or watch any of the stuff they were named after. It's a little weird.]

Mm… I suppose it's all you can do in the end.

It could have been, yeah! Though if anyone was named Sparrow, they're probably pretty glad to have been born in another part of the country. But not you, I take it?

[Wash just nods in agreement. There really isn't anything else that can be said when it's been a reality of his life for so long.]

Oh? Why would anyone not want to be named Sparrow there? And yeah, no, I'm not named after anyone famous. I'm actually named after a state in one of the countries back home. [Which is true for what he's called now. His real name of "David" isn't from anyone famous as far as he knows.]

Well, there's nothing wrong with it, of course! But- well, between the two of us, they might feel a little threatened. [the most harmless smile]

Really? Is that common?

...Ah ha. I see. [And yeah, he's just...gonna shake his head.]

Um. Well, no. It's the name I was given when I officially became an agent. The others I work with are like that too.

[:D]

Ah! And that links you all into the team! [beam of appreciation.]

[Wash laughs] Hah, yeah! Exactly! We're a pretty tight group at times, even if we're all really super competitive with one another. But who isn't?

[he tilts his head in thought and shrugs] Hard to say! People who don't need to be, perhaps.

Yeah, I guess. [He starts fiddling with CT's helmet again.] Hey, I should go. Good to meet you, by the way and...thanks. [He doesn't elaborate about why he's saying thanks, but talking about things has helped a bit.] I'm sure I'll see you around.

Same here. 'Til then!
