[today there is a nine-year-old girl on the Astral Plane who, perhaps surprisingly, doesn't seem that bothered about her sudden presence in a multi-dimensional nexus. she has long brown hair and is wearing a plain T-shirt and jeans that are a little tattered and dirty, as though they've seen quite a bit of exploring. but her hair is neat and she doesn't look like she's been in anything particularly dirty today. being a curious child, though, she's made for the most interesting place she could spot--the black hole. currently, she has a hand in the gravity field around it and is attempting to see how far she can reach into that]

That feels weird! [she pushes her hand a little farther in, making a face at the sensation of the gravity fighting back] What is this thing?

[anyone listening might notice that the girl has a clear Mancunian accent. in fact, she may even look a bit familiar. but on her end, she's too busy poking at the field to notice anyone who might be approaching]

[ooc: Menzies is currently under her first experiment! For the time being, she has been regressed to when she was nine.]

I'm nine! How old are you? [the look on her face clearly says that if you're going to ask nosy questions, that gives her the right to ask nosy questions back]

[her eyes widen to the size of saucers at that shocking revelation] The twenty-sixth century? Really!?

[amused by that look, he gives her an answer that he's in his mid-twenties] That answer your question?

[he nods] Yep. You wouldn't exactly see this armor in your time, you know?

Mmm. [she nods, looking appeased]

[she shakes her head at that] I don't know! I've never met anybody from space before. Do you always wear armour, or is that just 'cause you're with the police?

Bit of both, actually. Plus it's heavier than it looks, so it can be a pain to constantly change out of. Helmet's not, thankfully. [tilts his head a bit] Wanna see?

[her eyes widen again, and she nods eagerly] Can I?

Sure can! [he reaches up and flicks the release to pop the seal. a soft hiss can be heard as the seal finally gives and gingerly, he removes the helmet, revealing a man with short, blond hair and blue eyes beneath. he wears a warm smile as he shifts his hold on the helmet to hold it out for her to see.]

[she's too focused on him for a start. she gazes up with wide eyes] You don't look any different! [she was expecting an alien, actually. no offense, North]

[but then she realises he's holding out his helmet, and she looks down at it. glancing at him for permission, she puts her hands on the sides of it so she can tilt it to see better] It's so big...

[he chuckles; his voice is much clearer now that he's not using his helmet radio to talk to her] Is that so? What were you expecting?

[he nods and makes sure she has it before he lets go of it] Kinda needs to be. I have all kinds of different read-outs and functions in that that I need to be able to see.

You're from space! Aren't you an alien?

[she leans over it, peering in awe at everything that's in the helmet] It's got machines inside! [she glances at him again, lifting it because she wants to try it on]

Nah, kid. I only work in space. I was born here on Earth. I've known a few people who were born on the moon and other colony worlds, though. But even if I wasn't, I'd still be a human. Just like you. [pats her on the head]

That's not all. Want to see something it can do? [he presses something on his helmet, causing his motion tracker to be activated. Yellow dots, some big and some small, instantly light up in a corner of the display.] Go ahead and put it on. It'll be a bit big on you, but that's okay. Just keep your hands on it after you've got it on.

[she makes a face at that head pat, giving him a look as she ducks away from it] What's it like? Is it like Star Wars?

What'd you do? [she puts the helmet over her head, holding it steady--and gasps] Woooow! There's stuff everywhere! What are all the dots?

[he kinda expects that reaction, so he stops pretty quickly.] Star Wars? Don't know if I've heard of that one. That's...the movie right?

[sounds amused] Those dots are people moving around in the area. The fainter they are, the lower and farther away they are. [he takes a couple steps away from her, his dot popping up on the screen and then disappearing as soon as he stops moving] But it doesn't show anyone who's not moving or has stopped moving. Not that setting, anyway.

[she looks at him in surprise] You 'aven't heard of Star Wars? Don't they 'ave films in the future? It's like... [she pauses, thinking of how to describe it] There are flying cars, and people live all over the universe and 'ave spaceships--on lots of planets. Is it like that in the future?

[she gives a short gasp when his bright dot appears and disappears] I see you! Move again!

[he smiles hearing her describe the movie. now that he's thinking about it, he does remember that as one of the ancient sci-fi films of this era.] Ah, that one, okay. And you know, it's pretty close, except for the flying cars. But we've got other things like the different spaceships and jetpacks to make up for it.

All right! You're the boss. [and he moves again, heading out into the living room and back again. as he comes back, something occurs to him that he wants to ask about, but he decides to wait until she's had her fun with the motion tracker.] Pretty cool, huh?

[she is suitably impressed, flying cars or not] Jetpacks? Wow!

[she laughs in excitement as she watches the dot move] That's really cool! Can it do lots of things like that?

Yeah, you'd think that, but you gotta be careful with those things. Need special training or you might break a leg or two when you come down a little too hard. [and, well, worse, but he's keeping it clean for her.]

Yep, it can. All depends on what I need to do. [walks back over to her, resting a hand on the helmet--and sneakily switches the thermals on.] I use this, for example, when I have to do things at night. Helps to keep the bad guys in sight.

Do you know 'ow to use a jetpack?

[she gasps at that] Whoa, that's bright! [she lets go of the helmet with one hand, waving it in front of her so she can see what it looks like with thermals on. she laughs, feeling very much like she's stepped into a film] You wear this all the time?

[he shrugs casually] I might have had a few lessons.

[he steps forward when she removes her hand, holding it for her in case it's too heavy--and he has a feeling it might be.] For the most part, yeah. I do take it off to eat and things like that.

Here, let me take this back for now. I'll let you look at it again later, okay?

[her eyes are wide. you get more impressive by the minute, North!]

[she'd be grateful if she realised how bad that could have been if he hadn't grabbed the helmet. but she lets him take it with a pout on her face] Oh...okay.

Did you find out where we are? [thoughtfully] I wonder why we're in the future. And, uh, not even the future like you're supposed to be.

[tucks his helmet under his arm, patting her on the shoulder] Chin up. The fun's not over yet. [he smiles at her, then puts his helmet back on for now (and also switches off the motion tracker and thermals while he's at it)]

As for where we are, we're definitely in someone's apartment. Lives on their own, from the looks of it. [peeks into the fridge and yep, seems like a good assessment to him] Not sure why we're in the future though. The Plane probably screwed up. But don't worry, we'll get you home somehow.

[she makes a face] I know! [she's still pouting, though]

What do we do now? [she frowns thoughtfully] Should we go back before the person gets 'ome?

Yeah, coming back to the Plane would be best. [and really, he can't think of a way to keep her here in her future without her coming across anything else that'll give away the fact that she's in her own apartment...] I'll take care of you until we can get you back home though. How's that sound?

All right. [she wrinkles her nose at his offer, though] I'll be okay. But maybe you could show me some things? [which is basically her way of saying she doesn't want to admit that she needs "taken care of" but also doesn't want to be left alone. she clasps and unclasps her hands, looking rather nervous now that he's reminded her of her predicament]

[she pauses before asking her next question because she really doesn't want to sound like...well, a kid. but she needs to know] Hey, North. Is there any way to tell my mum so she doesn't get worried?

[he raises an eyebrow at her response but for some reason, a part of him isn't surprised by that.] Of course. I'll hang around, though, if you have any questions or get lonely. Besides, I can show you some more things this ol' helmet can do if you get bored.

[now, he knows there can't be an actual way for her to do that, or so he reasons. that decided, it doesn't mean he isn't going to try] You know, there has to be. Tell you what, there's a mail box back on the Plane. We could write her a letter if you'd like.

[she smiles, content with the sense that she's still being independent--and excited to play more with that helmet] Okay!

A letter? [considering that, she makes a face] But I'll 'ave been gone for a long time before she gets that...
