[a sharp, loud whistle sounds across the Plane, the Doctor at the source of the sound with a mischievous twinkle in his eye. after discreetly wiping his fingers off, he holds up a Betamax tape in his other hand. one might also notice his hair has been done up in a pompadour. (and really, he hasn't bothered restyling it yet.)]

Hello, you lot! Glad to have your attention. I have a few questions, one of which pertains to this. [he gives the tape a wave] Now, don't be fooled by its black, plastic exterior. Trapped within this is a very dangerous entity that can feed on neural energy--if this is played and is accidentally released. However! That won't happen if, well, someone neutralises the residual electronic pattern on this.

Now, I don't exactly have the time to do this myself, so that brings me back to one of my questions: do any of you have the technology to tape over it?

[The loud whistle caught Heero's attention from where he was sitting with his laptop and a bunch of old computers. Bar as usual.

[he looks like he's done, but then he adds] And what's your name? I don't believe we've met. I'm the Doctor.

It's old technology. [He turned his attention back to his laptop, typing in a command and knowing from experience that he won't be left alone.] No and no idea.

[Oliver is looking a little frazzled and anxious, but at least he has better hair than the Doctor] You're sure that thing's not going to get out when somebody puts it in a player?

[reassuringly in a slightly dismissive way] Ollie, Ollie, Ollie! You need to trust me. [puts a hand on his shoulder, his voice soft but firm] I'm not going to let the Wire do what it did to you again. So, of course I'm sure! So long as no one actually plays it, and even then, the Wire isn't going to crawl out of the telly or leave ominous messages on the ansaphone.

[arches an eyebrow] Very good! Extremely good, even! And surprising someone as young as you can tell the difference between it and a VHS so easily.

[Jamie stares at the Doctor's hair for a moment, and then glances at the tape, giving it a faintly puzzled look. It doesn't quite look like some of the other ones he's seen.

But, for once, he doesn't immediately go up and start asking questions. Instead, he hangs back a bit, peering about to see if anyone else is with the Doctor at the moment or not.]

A 'tape'? [It was obvious that the word didn't mean anything to Gwen, but it was just as obvious that she was intrigued.] What is it?

Glad you asked! [he loves getting to show off] This is called a "Betamax" videocassette. This is used to record video and audio of an event just like its cousin, the VHS--short for "Video Home System"--which was far more friendly and more convenient to use than the Betamax. So unfortunately, it's a bit obsolete. Well, it was obsolete the day it was created, really, but it's really obsolete now. [and he should really stop saying that word, so he does]

Doctor! Nice hair. [yes, she is smirking at you. would you expect any less?] You do realise that's already way out of date even in my time? [by which she could be referring to the tape or the hair. probably both]

[he takes this as a genuine compliment!] Why thank you! And yes, I am painfully aware, but there are collectors, aren't there? People who show off primitive old technology in a Youtube video?

Never seen one of those. It's old technology, but if I can get to a salvage yard, I might be able to find something to do it.

[he rubs his chin, considering it] It's a possibility. But what do you mean by "if" you can get to a salvage yard?

[shakes his head] Doesn't work that way, not with this creature. Break its prison and it escapes, and most likely will jump into the closest electrical thing it can find--and if there is nothing like that around, it could very well jump into you. Well, not you specifically, but whomever is foolish enough to just break the tape.

You have an evil entity trapped on that thing? Aren't those things relics by now?

[nods] Yup! And yes--but! In 1953, this was high technology. [slight pause] A highly anachronistic piece of high technology, but high technology for the times nonetheless.

[he doesn't immediately notice] Hmmm, it might work, but with many modifications to the cassette itself. If I remember correctly, VHS tapes were made just a little smaller than Betamax so there wouldn't be any dual usages.

But look at you! How are you doing that? Is it simple levitation? I don't quite see any device generating such lift. Is it a natural ability? [granted, none of those are the original questions he means to ask, but it isn't often he meets a humanoid who can do so with such ease]

[Eithan blinks at the Doctor, then at his hair, then at the Beatmax tape. He smiles a bit.]

Uh, yeah, I think I have a friend who does. Maybe. I mean, think it'd be the same between worlds? I dunno.

[... Wait.] Hold up. There's somethin' trapped in there?

[absently] Well, yes, but it's perfectly safe right now so long as you don't ever, ever, ever play the tape. And I'd imagine it would the same design between realities. The creation of the Betamax is inevitable as the creation of boy bands: some people might not like it, but those who really enjoy them will be loyal for a very long time.

I don't have something that could wipe that sucker off the map, but if you need more time I'm your knight. Sup. [The whistle caught his attention and he jumped from where he'd been to appear in faint whispers of time near the Doctor.]

Unless you want to hook it up to a computer and record over it that way.

[as a Time Lord, the Doctor definitely feels that and can't help looking at the young man very curiously] So you're "Sup the Knight" then? [knows that probably isn't the case but he can't help himself] But no, Sup, I don't want to risk any damage to the tape. You really don't want this escaping.
