Shadows. Most don't know about them.

Why is that? Do they only show up in certain places?

What sort of places?

... Places people can't see them.

[She is both frustrated and amused by this kid. Not to mention increasingly intrigued.]

Back alleys, places people don't frequent, or places that normal people can't get to?

... Kind of all three. Mostly the last one.
