001 | Enter the (second) Serpent
[He appears to be a young man in his twenties with black hair. His eyes are covered in sunglasses and he wears a stylish suit that seems to be tailored to him. Old habits die hard, after all. He is also flipping through a badly tattered book.]
No... This one isn't right.... Just decaying paper. Bloody hell, Angel. Why did you have to go and leave me?
[He closes the book gently, the delicate spine crumbling a bit as he does so. He finally looks up from the book and realizes he's... Well, nowhere from his world, that's for certain. He looks around.]
Well, this is a bloody positive change from rubble and blood.
[His senses heighten. If this is a new place, there might be other creatures here. He's been running for so long from not just angels, but his own kind, this sort of reaction is the only one he knows anymore.]
Is this some sort of trick to get my guard down? Maybe I'm hallucinating. I wouldn't be surprised if I've gone mad.
[However... If there was some alcohol around, maybe he could drown away his cares again.]
I wonder if there's some drink here. It's been far too bloody long since the last time I had a decent drink. Maybe I can forget the last thirty years.

You can use that, if you like. I can leave it on the Plane. I wasn't using it for much anyway.
[He gestures toward the quasi-room with a nod.]

Bloody hell what did you just do?

Makes setting up wayside pulpits that much easier.
[Works slowly on his drink]

It may have had something to do with my time on the Plane back then, but I can't seem to recall.

So your world hasn't been destroyed... What have I missed?

No one uses cassettes anymore--music is all digital now, little computer files. Phones are mobile and the size of your palm. Films have gone 3D.
Again.

Do they still use those red and blue glasses?

Here--
[He pulls his iPhone from the pocket of his suit jacket and holds it out.]
Everyone uses mobiles now. Most don't even have landlines anymore.

Let me guess, this thing has a computer inside it that's exponentially more powerful than the one we had.

I can get you one if you like. As I recall, the Machine allows us to phone people in other realities.

[His eyes light up a bit at the thought of having one of these marvelous machines.]
Really?
no subject
Remember those shares of Apple we bought?
no subject
Bloody hell, seriously?

[He nods to the phone]
That'll play music in addition to everything else. You can talk on it, send mail, figure a tip in a restaurant, anything you like. It even has little games on it.
I'm quite partial to Plants Vs. Zombies at the moment.

[He manages to figure out the touch screen and flips through all the little app icons. Oh yes, he's quite in awe.]
Fantastic job.

[And because all this altruism is starting to get to him--never mind that it doesn't actually count as altruism since it's directed at himself--it's time to change the subject.]
So who've you met already? Here on the Plane, I mean.

...ah well. Things will certainly be more interesting around here now with the two of us.

How long have you been back?
no subject
Not long. I was in Soho a few days ago when I found the shop again.
