001 | Enter the (second) Serpent

[He appears to be a young man in his twenties with black hair. His eyes are covered in sunglasses and he wears a stylish suit that seems to be tailored to him. Old habits die hard, after all. He is also flipping through a badly tattered book.]

No... This one isn't right.... Just decaying paper. Bloody hell, Angel. Why did you have to go and leave me?

[He closes the book gently, the delicate spine crumbling a bit as he does so. He finally looks up from the book and realizes he's... Well, nowhere from his world, that's for certain. He looks around.]

Well, this is a bloody positive change from rubble and blood.

[His senses heighten. If this is a new place, there might be other creatures here. He's been running for so long from not just angels, but his own kind, this sort of reaction is the only one he knows anymore.]

Is this some sort of trick to get my guard down? Maybe I'm hallucinating. I wouldn't be surprised if I've gone mad.

[However... If there was some alcohol around, maybe he could drown away his cares again.]

I wonder if there's some drink here. It's been far too bloody long since the last time I had a decent drink. Maybe I can forget the last thirty years.

[This Crowley makes his way back over to the bar and takes up his previous spot as well as his glass.]

You can use that, if you like. I can leave it on the Plane. I wasn't using it for much anyway.

[He gestures toward the quasi-room with a nod.]

You can bring things to the Plane--not people, unless they've already been here, but objects. Buildings, rooms, televisions. Plants.

Makes setting up wayside pulpits that much easier.

[Works slowly on his drink]

One of the spares, actually. I moved to Knightsbridge not long ago. Plenty of room in the new flat and nothing to do with it.

I... haven't a clue, now that you mention it. I suppose it seemed the thing to do at the time.

It may have had something to do with my time on the Plane back then, but I can't seem to recall.

Ah, let's see... the Middle East is still buggered, so not much new there. Prince William's just gotten married--his mum was killed about a decade ago.

No one uses cassettes anymore--music is all digital now, little computer files. Phones are mobile and the size of your palm. Films have gone 3D.

Again.

Nah, they've gone black. Still not very stylish, but there you have it.

Here--

[He pulls his iPhone from the pocket of his suit jacket and holds it out.]

Everyone uses mobiles now. Most don't even have landlines anymore.

Got it in one. I had a bit of a hand in them, but you know the boys Downstairs when it comes to technology. I doubt they've even read the reports.

I can get you one if you like. As I recall, the Machine allows us to phone people in other realities.

Sure. [He waves a hand dismissively] I own enough stock in the company they practically throw these things at me.

Remember those shares of Apple we bought?

As a heart attack. They're the biggest thing in music players these days as well.

[He nods to the phone]

That'll play music in addition to everything else. You can talk on it, send mail, figure a tip in a restaurant, anything you like. It even has little games on it.

I'm quite partial to Plants Vs. Zombies at the moment.

I thought so. I'll bring one when I come to the Plane next.

[And because all this altruism is starting to get to him--never mind that it doesn't actually count as altruism since it's directed at himself--it's time to change the subject.]

So who've you met already? Here on the Plane, I mean.

Mn. No one from the old days, then. Not that I can remember them all anyway.

...ah well. Things will certainly be more interesting around here now with the two of us.

Yeah, a few years ago near as I can tell. Somehow I stopped coming here and forgot about it. Or vice versa, I suppose.

Not long. I was in Soho a few days ago when I found the shop again.
