[Morgana is trying to read in the library by candlelight. She does so for some time, paying little mind to the candle as the wax builds up and dulls the light. Until it goes out entirely.

Annoyed, Morgana looks to the candle—her eyes flash gold—and then the candle is lit again. For the briefest moment Morgana looks satisfied, before surprise and fear move in so fast that she starts and knocks the candle over, spilling wax everywhere as it sputters out again.]

It must have been...

[And now she doesn't even have any matches.]

I don't know. It isn't my present. In my time, there are witch hunters and the Druids have a community apart from our own, but there is no place where children with magic can go to be taught how to use what they have. If there had been one, it would have been destroyed in the Great Purge.

[Uther destroyed Hogwarts!!!]

[That bastard! Someone get a time-turner!]

Great Purge? That... that sounds really ominous.

[He grabs a chair near her and takes a seat.]

What happened? I mean... if you even can talk about it. If it's too hard to, you don't have to. Trust me, I understand.

[She pauses for a moment, but shakes her head.] I was just a child when the Purge happened, and my father was the king's close friend. It was a purging of the Old Religion, over twenty years ago. The king waged war against those who practised magic. He killed most of them, and no one has openly practised magic and lived in Camelot since.

[Eithan can't believe what he's hearing.]

What in hell...! Why? Th' hell gave him that right?

[Where before Morgana would have spat out a strong condemnation of her king, now she hesitates. Her answer is careful.] His Majesty saw those who used magic as a threat. He saw them as.... as treacherous. And evil. He said he had to purge the kingdom of magic to protect his people.

[Eithan shakes his head slowly.]

Man... Yeah, magic's powerful, but couldn't there have been some other way or somethin'? I mean, to kill people just for bein' mages...

He—he thought it was the only way. He did what he was thought was right. [She isn't quite managing to balance her feelings for Uther with her anger at his actions, but she is trying.]

No, yeah, I get that. I just... There should have been another way, you know? I'm just... sorry it happened at all.

It's... passed now. Uther is dead, and the new king does not as eagerly pursue his father's wars.
