[She lowers the weapon, very slightly, taking in her surroundings. Or rather, the lack thereof.]

Contractor!

[She turns in a slow circle, tension wrapped around her like a creaking spring.]

Contractor! Show yourself. You’re being stupid. Using your power on a member of the NPA will get you killed. It isn’t worth the laugh.

[A pause. She’s starting to get angry again.]

Show yourself!

[She looks up, down, around at the stars, and a pained expression crosses her face. Barely audible, she mutters,]

You people… know how to be cruel.

[smiles slightly] It is nice. It was... something I missed, too. But there's so much crime to keep up with. I don't know that it would be possible if Gene didn't ignore most of standard procedure when he organizes. Or whatever he tries to pass off as organization.

Crime is bad in your England? [She sighs.] Japan had a reputation as one of the safest countries, before the Gates showed up.

In my experience, crime is bad everywhere, always. If it isn't, the police are probably all corrupt and terrorising the citizens. [his own sigh] If that Gate made it worse, I don't envy you.

[She raises an eyebrow, almost insulted--but really, who wants to compare homicide statistics? Mental sigh. Westerners.]

It did. People tend to panic when the world changes without their permission.

How did they appear, though? Just overnight?

For all I know, yes. One day they weren't there, the next they were. I was in high school at the time. By the time I joined the NPA the information concerning their appearance was classified.

[This is a look of wry amusement.] That's been the look on the face of every scientist in the world for eleven years.

And there haven't been any answers, have there? No explainations, no meaning, nothing?

[Mental blargh at the thought.] Depends on who you ask. There are a number of cults devoted to Gate worship. But if you mean meaning in a scientific context, then very little.

[Pause.] At least very little that someone of my rank is permitted to know about. Enough was known to make the Heaven's Gate to haywire. Or whatever it was that it did.

[Gives him a measuring look to see if he knew about Heaven's Gate already, too.]

[meets her gaze levelly] What happened Brazil. That does imply that someone set it off on purpose.

[She smiles a little tiredly] He told you more than I thought. I'll admit, I'm a bit surprised.

I kept asking questions, and didn't give up when he acted like he wanted the subject closed. [a half-smile] Insensitivity can be a surprisingly effective interrogation tactic at times.

[Snerk.] It can. It often is, in fact, when you know how to push the right way.

[Remembers oh-so-fondly Li's expression when the caught him buying lingerie and asked if he was planning to wear it.]

But there is the implication that someone purposefully caused the destruction at Heaven's Gate?

Was the mention of insensitivity a sort of apology for the continued line of questioning, then?

[didorothy]

No; I don't apologise for questioning unless I think an apology is warranted. I'm going to take that as a 'yes.' Is there any idea as to who might've been responsible for those events?

[She sighs.] I'll grant you the truth of suspected sabotage. If there is any indication of who it was, it's likely beyond my clearance.

[nods, frowning]

[tugs on his sleeves] Car accident.

And what--it threw you into the past?

Or put me in a coma. Or, as the Doctor suggested, I've been partially temporally displaced, which means I'm in a coma and back in time.

[She frowns her own frown of thoughtfulness]

You can't simply be hallucinating, can you? If the Guv knows you, and he isn't some personal projection.

I know you aren't projecting me, or Li-san, and the histories that some of these people have are too complex to simply be conjured up in one unconscious man's head. So, by extension, it's likely that you aren't projecting your Guv. And if you aren't projecting him, then he must be real, and so must be the fact that you're in 1973--possibly temporally displaced, was it? but still in 1973.

[Frown of thoughtfulness deepens.] I would think, at least.

[didorothy]

[nods, looking at the ground]
