[Perhaps you remember from ages ago, when everyone received an egg with their own personal pet in it? Well, River has been very carefully keeping hers safe and warm until finally, finally it has hatched.

Now River is sitting cross-legged on the floor of the plane, watching enchanted as a tiny unicorn about the length of her hand runs around gleefully. BEST. PET. EVER.]

[Jamie is staring at the unicorn with a rather disbelieving expression on his face. That can't possibly be a unicorn. They don't exist. He has established this quite firmly. So why is there a wee bitty one running around on the Plane?]

Och, am I dreaming again?

It's mine.

So it is. Well, it'll make a fine protector for ye when it grows up. Er, if it grows up.

[He rubs at the back of his head, looking quite bemused.]

Where did ye find it?

It hatched from an egg.

Oh! I... [He's distracted from what he's saying for a moment as the unicorn bumps into him and he glances down at it.] I got a ferret from one of those.

[And, because it seems an easy way to work into introductions...] His name's Trouble. Mine's Jamie.

[He gingerly reaches a hand down to try and gently pat the unicorn on its head.] Er, there's a nice beastie.

It doesn't have a name yet.

Sometimes it takes a wee bit to come up with one. [Jamie glances over at River.] Do ye have one, lass?

[For all he knows, she doesn't, and...oh. Uh. What is the beastie doing now? Hey, maybe it's hungry.] I'm not sure I have anything...oh!

[He was hanging around with Trouble earlier, and maybe he still has a treat or two on him. They're ferret treats, so who knows if the unicorn will like them, but it's worth a try. He offers one to the tiny not-horse.] If ye don't like these, I'll go get ye an apple.

He likes apples. I have a name.

[Can't blame the unicorn for that. It is a fairly specialized treat, after all.] Oh? I'll be right back, then.

[Jamie vanishes and a few seconds later appears with an apple, which he slices down the middle with his dirk. He offers River the other half, picking up the conversation where he left off.]

So would ye like to tell me what it is, or do ye want me to try and guess?

It could be a game!

Aye, well... [Oh, well, why not? He cuts off a rather smaller piece from the other half for the unicorn and lets it nibble as it may while he studies River.]

All right. Would ye be Mary?

Quite contrary. The parameters don't fit.

[Jamie can gather that's a 'no', and hrms thoughtfully.]

Abigail, then.

[Maybe she thinks so - but right now he's looking a bit cranky over being giggled at.] Now, look, I don't see what's so funny. Abigail is a perfectly good name.

Maybe if ye gave me a hint, I might be able to figure it out faster.

It's very wet.

[Only almost?] Very wet. Oh, aye, I see. [He does, sort of. Wet might be water. Bodies of water, maybe? But what body of water could it be?]

Loch. [And because that makes no sense at all whatsoever, he adds on to it.] Loch...anne. Lochanne.

[Hey, look, Jamie's made up a brand new name! Pity it's not actually hers.]

It's pretty.

[It's not bad if he does say so himself. Still, that wasn't either a yes or a no, and even with the encouraging noises he's not certain it's the right name.] Aye, but is it yours?
