[sitting at a desk in the middle of the Astral Plane, working on his paperwork like a good little nancy boy. And, like a good little nancy boy, he's listening to a broadway musical. On the glasses Fumie gave him, to be specific.

In fact, he's singing along to one. Yes indeed, Sam's singing "If You Were Gay."]

What are they like? Are they like the Master?

[Does not like talking about this.] Not as powerful. Different mindsets.

What sorts of mindsets? [once Sam starts a line of questioning, he doesn't end until he gets to the bottom of things. Dog with a bone, oh yes]

[Gives him a careful look.] Does it really matter? Either way, I'm not used to dealing with people like the Master.

It matters when it sounds like you're trying to hide something.

[Change of plans! Hei starts in with the innocent act again.] It's...not that. It's just...[Rubs the back of his head] strange things have been happening since the Gate appeared, and I don't really like thinking about it.

What sorts of strange things?

[Decides to throw Sam a bone.] People disappearing. Unexplained deaths. Rumors of people with strange abilities, that are starting to become more than just rumors. That's how I know about the hypnosis. Some of the rumors sound ridiculous, but others...

Seen any of it for yourself?

[Sharply,] My parents disappeared when the Gates showed up, and I haven't seen my sister in five years. Does that count?

Not when it still seems like you're hiding something.

[Hei can only be pushed so far before he starts pushing back.]

What was it like when you died, Mr. Tyler?

Bit hellish, actually, but after the actual dying was done I was all right. Why are you hiding things?

[All of Hei's plans are backfiring! He's also getting pissed off and feeling rather cornered, which isn't a good combination.]

It doesn't concern you.

There aren't many things about my friends that don't concern me.

[Congratulations, Sam, you are one of the few people EVER who has been able to catch him off guard.]

'Friend'? 'Mate'? Not sure I know any other synonyms. 'Bloke I'm fond of' doesn't roll off the tongue, does it?

[Looks away and says nothing, because he doesn't know what to say.]

[looks at him carefully, and then shrugs, leaning back in his chair] You don't have to tell me anything. But I'd at least like to know why you're not telling.

[Long, long pause, and when he answers he's not looking at Sam.] Because it's dangerous. You're not involved, and you shouldn't have to be.

I won't be. I'm not part of your world, Li. Whatever it is that's dangerous, it can't touch me.

It will if anyone else from my world ever arrives here.

And then I won't even have knowledge to help me.

[You are mean, Sam. Hei looks away, and it's a while before he answers.]

If ever someone comes here who mentions Contractors, or claims to be one--be very careful. Avoid them if you can. [Pauses again.] Contractors are soulless monsters, and they wouldn't think twice about killing you if they thought you were a threat.

[nods, a silent thank you] Hypnotists are some of these Contractors?

[ooc; just as Sam tells Kirihara that he doesn't know what Contractors are, too!]
