Ladies, gentleman: I am here to invite you all to an event two days hence at the Coliseum, where four of your fellows will battle to their deaths. The food is free; the sport is costly. These will be the first of fights but not the last, and we hope you enjoy the entertainment we offer in these next few weeks. A fair few of you will have your chance to live or die, whether or not you wish to.

[He fixes the angle of his hat.] And someone should try to keep the children from it. Small mercies.

[He starts talking in Greek. To practice.] Some people find the murder of it entertaining, but most are interested in the human - or other - drama that surrounds it.

And the whole entertainment, "death shall amuse the denizens greatly" part too- reminds me of my family actually; though I doubt you're actually related to me since we're on a whole different plane of reality or something like that. ...But why? Why do you want to entertain us? Why do you want people to die for it?

[He smiles at being asked that.] The death is what he desires. Spectacle is his idea of kindness - or perhaps of cruelty? It can be a task to tell.
