[The Doctor looks a little lost in the woods, literally and figuratively. He's staring at his reflection in the stream, arms wrapped around his knees.

After a few long moments of brooding, he frowns, and starts pulling things out of his pockets. His sonic screwdriver, high-tech night vision binoculars, psychic paper, a banana --

he frowns at that one]

When did I put you in there? And what for? Who carries around a banana? Can't blame myself for liking them, they've got loads of potassium, but it's a bit random...why can't I remember?

[he slowly peels the banana and eats it, hoping it will spark something in his memories. Or lack thereof.]

[sits down next to him, a bit concerned at the behaviour he's been witnessing. he has no idea why the Doctor is brooding and emptying his pockets, but he still intends to do something about it]

What's wrong with the banana?

[glances up at Oliver, still looking horribly confused] Nothing's wrong with the banana, but I think something's wrong with me.

[well, that was a great way to make him even more worried] What do you mean? What is it?

[pauses for a moment, then very softly] Who am I, Oliver?

[blinks] What do you mean? You're the Doctor.

Doctor who? [there's no trace of humour in his question -- he's dead serious]

[stares] That's not funny.

[frustrated] I'm not trying to be funny.

But...that is who you are.

Doctor, what is going on?

Oh. That's an odd sort of name. And I don't know...I can't remember anything. Well, no, I can remember some things, just -- not who I am.

[confused] But you remember who I am. How can you not remember you?

[have a helpless shrug, Oliver. He really doesn't like this. :(] I don't know.

[he wishes he knew what to do about it! the Doctor's supposed to be the problem-solver, after all] Okay, well... Let's start with what you do remember. Do you remember where you were? What you were doing?

...Nothing out of the ordinary? The last thing I remember is teaching Jack a few tricks for repairing the console.

[blinks] So you remember the TARDIS, too? But... [pauses, trying to work this out for a moment, and finally heaves a sigh] I don't get it. Have you only forgotten your name?

[shakes his head] I don't know. I don't remember how I got this banana...

Oookay, that's weird.

What about the other stuff from your pocket? [glances at the sonic screwdriver, hesitates for a moment, and then picks it up. his expression briefly might just be screaming "I'M ACTUALLY HOLDING THE SONIC SCREWDRIVER." and then he focuses back on the crisis at hand] You remember this, right?

[nods] 'Course I do, it's the sonic screwdriver. I use it for unlocking things, and...stuff.

[if Nine's not going to say anything, Oliver's just going to keep holding it, silently gleeing] [nods] Yeah, that's good. [blinks] But is that the only thing you remember that it does?

[curiously--he might be starting to sense a pattern here] Doctor, what do you remember about me? I mean, I know you know who I am, but...do you remember us meeting? Or anything that happened? [not that he particularly wants to remember some of those events, but the it's the easiest topic to test his theory on]

I...how d'you remember it?

[frowns] Doctor, if I tell you, we won't know if you remember.

[sighs] I met you on Earth. Then we travelled together, and...you got hurt. We travelled again afterward, and you stayed behind on Gondovan.

[nods. that's an accurate summary, and Oliver assumes he left out any further details on purpose] So you do remember. I thought maybe you couldn't remember any details about things, but you do, so what's missing... [frowns, wishing he could at least help the Doctor by figuring out what the experiment's done. he's quite sure by now that it must be an experiment. after all, what else could mess with his memories like this?]

Maybe it's only certain details?

That makes sense. So you don't remember your name or how you got the banana, but you remember about the sonic screwdriver and TARDIS and me. [frowns] What's all that got in common?
