[here is Barbara, in her chair, near the library

in her hands, she turns round a bright red apple; there's a faint smile on her face as she stares at it, curious and impressed and fond]

Wonder where she got it.

Let me guess: unfriendly woman with a talent for gardening?

At least she has the courtesy to be upfront about it. [A short pause as he considers about how poison ivy makes people itch, but he decides not to pursue that line of thought.] But if Ms Ivy is growing food in her park, I'd be surprised if she hasn't had many come by for her produce, unfriendly or not.

She can hold off an entire city of desperate people?

[Impressed] I'd almost consider hiring her for my gardens.

Everyone has their flaws. But your friend was able to avoid that? She must be quite talented.

And I imagine you've quite an eye for talent. Still, no matter how talented your friend is, a large-scale theft from this woman's park to feed those who need it doesn't seem a completely plausible plan. Does she have a surplus? If there's something to bargain with...

You don't happen to have any particularly rare plant life lying around, do you?

I wouldn't want to risk anyone on a treacherous route when the chances of it working aren't so high. If you name a plant, I can get it for you. I might even have it growing in my gardens. No risk for the same gain.

[He frowns.] How helpful. I wouldn't trust it if I hadn't thought of it myself.

[He presses his fingertips together, thoughtful] You're in the early 21st century, aren't you? What about a male and a female each of Encephalartos woodii? I'd only bother with the female, but you've been cloning the male for some time now and that does degrade the stock with your level of technology.

I'll ask Mr Crofton to pick up a get a few free from the greenhouses. It will be interesting trying to get those through the post.
