[Today Merlin is hard at work. This is, really, nothing new at all. In fact, he's always working. Do this, do that, go here, go there--

He's not bitter. Really. ...Sigh.

Anyway, he's sitting on the ground with a few pairs of boots around him. A wooden basin of murky, sudsy water is next to him and a glass jar of some sort of wax substance in front of him. He is tending to the boots with care and making sure they are good and clean. He seems very involved with his work and despite being tired of chores, he's humming.

A few of the boots have holes and tears but he has a patch kit nearby, too. Merlin has it all covered. He's a good servant, after all.]

Uh, I guess this is probably...not something I could ask but do you have any books I could read? About anything magic?

[looking at him curiously] I have plenty of texts on magic. I'm not sure all of them would apply, but I'd be happy to loan them to you.

[He nods.] Just with Arthur here and all this magic and science and all that of other universes, I've still got to protect him. So I should know more about it.

If you give me a moment, I can bring you something. But I'm afraid you'll have to keep it here on the Plane.

[He nods.] No, yeah, I understand. I promise I'll keep it here.

Excellent. [Brax is gone only for a moment, returning with ~~an iPad~~ a tablet which he hands over to Merlin] This is science well past your time, so I'll help run you through it. To turn it on, you have to press that button in the left-hand corner. It will turn off automatically after disuse. I've programmed it to voice commands as well, so it should be able to figure out most things you want of it, but I prefer the more tactile experience.

[oooooooh shiny. He accepts it and hits the button. His eyes wide as the screen comes to life and he holds it away from him. Then, curious, he touches it. It reacts!!!

Merlin is so delighted he tries it again.]

[mildly] Wolsey had the exact same reaction.

[Merlin is still distracted dragging icons around the screen.]

Wolsey?

[with a definite smile]

...Oh. [He stops playing with it.] Right, yeah, it was just...moving a lot. Like a river, only with pictures.

[smiling broadly, tee hee] What a novel description, Merlin. How do you like it?

It's...it's like magic. Do I just touch what I want?

That's right. It will bring up a new display.

And then what? Can I just...play with it and it won't break?

It's very durable, but try not to step on it or drop it in a vat of acid.

[....wait.] ...'Vat of acid'?

You do know what that is, don't you? I'd normally know if it's anachronistic, but it is a bit more trouble with alternate histories.

Yeah, I know, just...vats of acid? Really?

It does tend to destroy things, no matter how good the make.

Yeah, I do try to stay away from it. Then again I try to stay out of things in general but then Arthur gets involved and protecting him is a full-time job.

Leaders are often a great deal of trouble. I'm sure you protect him admirably.

Well, he's still alive? And pretty much...oblivious to everything going on around him.

Oh, then you are doing well. [whoops, a moment of Sir Humphrey]

[Confused.] Why's that mean I'm doing a good job?
