[arrives and falls over, spreading out her arms in a dramatic 'I give up' motion. after a moment she sits up and reaches into her pocket, opening an energy drink and downing it]

Maa, why is school giving such a heavy workload? We don't have time for cases anymore. I haven't had free time in forever. Middle school exams are coming up, too. I'm doomed.

Ahh, thank you. It's just a hassle sometimes.

Oh, I understand. I'm a student myself.

Ah, really? You must be in university, then.

Yup. I'm an exchange student in Tokyo.

Ah! You mentioned that before. What do you study?

A little of everything, for now. I'm thinking of focusing on astronomy, though.

Oh! The stars. You have to know a lot of math for that.

[Laughs.] That's true. It's even more complicated now that the stars are gone.

[eyes widen] Gone?! Did they all explode...?

Hm? I haven't told you?

They all disappeared ten years ago, when the Gates appeared.

[tilts her head] But they can't just vanish, ne? That seems so impossible...

They might still be there, but we can't see them anymore. And all the rockets we try to send into space end up disappearing.

[Shrugs.] It's the Gate. It's an impossibility in itself.

What is the Gate, though...?

It's...it's hard to describe. We call it Hell's Gate. It's a nightmare realm that appeared in Tokyo ten years ago. It can make all sorts of things happen; people who go near it have hallucinations, see ghosts and hear voices and such...people who actually go inside it usually don't come back.

There was a second Gate at first, as well--Heaven's Gate, in South America.

'Heaven's Gate' makes it sound nicer.

It wasn't. It disappeared five years ago. When it did, it took most of South America with it.

[ooc: The track suit guys, right? haha, I studied them in my religion class]

[just stares] The whole continent...?

Well, most of it. There's small pieces of it left.

[ooc: Learned about Jonestown too. That was a fun one :D]

[frowns because that's horrible but decides not to think about that part] But no one knows what it is?

We don't know much about it. Just that it changed our world in a fundamental way, and that it's very, very dangerous.

[ooc: lol, they really are.]

[frowns but then goes back to normal genki mode] Well, I know you'll figure it out! You're working on it, so all it takes is some research.

[Laughs and rubs the back of his head.] Well, I'm not directly working on it...though that would be interesting some day. But you're right. A lot of mysteries end up being solved in the end, don't they?

[nods] Right! And even if you're not directly working on it, you might find something useful someday.

[Chuckles a little.] Maybe so. [Long pause as he actually thinks this over.] It would be nice to someday know more about it...
