[A young man stumbles onto the Plane and freezes. He seems to be in awe. His eyes are wide as he looks around and he is still as he adjusts to the strangeness. He's dressed in a rather medieval peasant way or at least what the BBC thinks medieval peasants look like.

But after the initial moment of fear and surprise, after a pause, Merlin smiles brightly.] Oh, this is...this is beautiful. I mean, really...really beautiful. I've never seen anything like it... [His voice becomes softer.] It feels like magic. Definitely looks it.

[Then he clears his throat and calls out.] Hello? Is anyone here? Uhm... Whoever did this, you can come out. I'm not going to hurt you. I just want to talk, promise. [After a beat.] Please? Look, just...if you need me, we'll talk, yeah? Whatever it is. You've got me now, so why not come out?

[He waits! Unsure of really what is happening but distracted by the shiny stars.]

Yeah, I noticed that but I wasn't going to say anything yet. But that's...you can't be. Just...that's forever away.

If magic can bring you here, is it so far a step to assume that it can bring someone from another time?

I guess not. But that would be really, really powerful magic.

But still magic within the realm of possibility.

Yeah, it's just... weird to think of someone with that much power.

[a soft laugh] I would say 'terrifying.' Are you ready for the second rather-difficult-to-believe truth about the place?

Aside from the different times, and the different places, there are people from universes that follow rules very different from your own. Worlds where magic doesn't exist, for example.

It's not that I don't believe you, just... it's hard to imagine a world without magic.

I imagine it would be. Surprisingly or not, most without magic seem to have gotten on well enough without it. They tend to invent it for themselves.

I guess that bit isn't so hard to imagine. That they get along without it. If there's no magic, there's no magical beasts always stomping around. You make do with what you have, right?

Precisely. How long have you been living in Camelot? Forgive my curiosity. I am an historian of sorts. It's of some interest.

Oh, uhm...I dunno. About a year or so, I guess. I haven't paid attention.

Does city life suit you? That would be... the place where your royals live, wouldn't it?

[He nods.] Yeah, they do. I sort of live there with them, more or less, between helping out Gaius - he's the royal physician, you see - and being Arthur's servant and all. But I love it there. It's a lot less simple than back home but it's exciting.

Arthur being one of the royals. King?

No, no, not yet, anyway. He's Prince Arthur. Uther is king.

Ahh, of course. I'm not completely familiar with the history of Camelot. And there is no reason it might not be a different Camelot with a different history.

I guess so. I know Arthur's going to be a great king, though. He's going to make everything better. [He seems obviously proud.]

[smiling] You have a great deal of faith in him, then?

[He smiles.] Yeah, I do. I mean, he's a prat and all, but he's got a good heart for his people.

That's very important in a leader. Are you both the same age, then? I suppose that's another inaccuracy for the books. [his smile changes into something sharper - more knowing] All of the references I have give the Great Wizard Merlin seniority over his King.

[Merlin is stunned, opening and then closing his mouth.] I'm...I'm not... I'm younger, yeah, but I'm not... It's illegal to practice magic.

Is it? Why is that?

Uther's law. He hates magic and anything to do with it. You just say 'magic' and he's ready to execute someone.
