[the Doctor appears on the Plane with a stern scowl, his voice low and harsh as he finishes what seems to be a callous tirade on law and enforcement; he looks every inch the ancient, ruthless crusader he is]

[then he blinks, and shakes his head] Well, that was a near miss. [all of the righteous anger has faded; he now looks pensively concerned] Hauling a child to prison for a bit of littering, in front of a large crowd no less – hardly a rational impulse.

[yeah, he happened to catch wind of that last bit]

Wait. You brought a kid in for that? Must've been a lot of trash...

Almost. I put myself here instead. [shakes his head] It was just a sweet wrapper.

Just that one thing... [yeah, mark that as one world he really doesn't want to visit.]

But time stops when we come here, right? Won't you have to go back to that, Mister...? [looks at Five expectantly for his name]

It isn't really like that, I'd put a stop to it if it were.

Doctor. [wry smile] And yes, it will be rather awkward, but at least I cut myself short, and now I've time to think.

[an uneasy smile] That's good! Uh, really good to hear.

Ahhh, yeah, I've had to do that lately: come here to calm down before I hurt someone... [he looks away for a moment before he remembers his manners] I'm Hitachiin Kaoru, Doctor...who, exactly?

It's a lovely place, really.

Really? That's very responsible of you, Kaoru - and it's just Doctor, really. More a name than a title.

Doctor, huh? [shrugs slightly] Works for me.

And do you think so? That it's responsible? I suppose it is, but for me, it's the only thing I can do. I've been feeling weird lately. Have you been feeling out of sorts or anything like that?

I think so. Better not to need to, but it's a good option to take if you do.

[slight nod] I have, yes - this was just the height of it, really.

I guess I should be thankful for being able to come to this place, but I can't help thinking maybe I wouldn't be feeling odd if I never did. [sounds slightly bitter]

Are you sure it is, though, Doctor? What if it's only the beginning of something worse? [and actually, now that he has a good look at the Doctor, he can't help wondering if he's really a twin. Alien twins sound neat!]

[wry smile] It's a possibility. I suppose you simply need to decide if it's worth it.

[slight nod] This could certainly be another rung on the ladder, so to speak.

[a shrug] I can't change it now. What's done is done. [and it least it was him and not his brother who ended up on the Plane without the other.]

Ladder to where though? Not everybody is like this, not even my friends who can come here. Is your twin feeling the same way?

May as well make the best of it, hmm?

There's the question, yes. [...pause] Twin? ...Do you mean Omega?

Yeah, sure. Might as well.

Hmmm? Yeah, Omega! Except you have better taste in clothing. [marginally, but he's seen Omega in those robes before so the Doctor wins by default]

It's the best way to make a troublesome experience worth it.

[amused smile] Thank you. We aren't twins, though, it's...all rather complicated.

[makes a face] So...you're not twins and it's complicated...

Long lost brothers? Parent had an affair with a person out of the country or, er, on a different planet?

In the name of what morals did you kill someone this time?

[with mock defensiveness] I haven't killed anyone!

Scared a boy half to death, perhaps...

I thought your morals would be the one lecturing people on 'hauling a child to prison for a bit of littering.' It's like every Doctor has snapped except the one I'm stuck with.

No, yours simply can't lie. I imagine you're having fun with that?

Mostly with third parties. There isn't much I don't know already.

Quite an opportunity for those third parties, however.

To what, hear the depressive ramblings of a mad Time Lord? There are better shows on the television.

Ah, but I can't change their endings.

[it's a casually lifted eyebrow, but there's a clear defense in it]

Do you expect to change his?

[his voice softens, almost defers] I'd rather like to influence it. None of them are living up to their potential, it's a bit tragic.

Are you trying to assuage my imperiousness?

[grin] Yes, but I'm also being sincere.

I agree. Do you know, just when we were on Mars to get more Easter chocolate, I thought I felt a point where he might've snapped, the way the other one seems to have gone a bit loopy. But he didn't. He just reasonably - with, of course, my helpful running commentary - found the Great Loophole in Time and rescued his precious humans without completely defying the causality of the universe. The story changes, but the ending stays the same. I think I might be going too easy on him.

Oh don't tell me you're losin' it, now.

[raises eyebrows] Who else is losing it?

Seen the Doctor lately? He's suicidal, he's king-of-the-universe, he's suicidal again... honestly, I get dizzy just looking at him. The man's mood swings 'round more than a tetherball. I don't know if I could handle you snapping, too.

[grimly amused] He is a tad unstable, isn't he? [shakes his head] I'm hoping he'll even out sooner or later.

And I'm not certain what this is, but I'm sure I'll overcome it.

Oh, who knows with him. Maybe he ought to just regenerate anyway-- a new personality might be a little more stable.

Hm. [ponders] Stress, you think?

[and the smile widens] Callous, Dorothy, but quite possibly true.

[he shakes his head] I don't get stressed.

Rationality is hardly your strongest suit, Doctor.

Now why would you say that?

Would you like a list of all of the times you have meddled in situations based on your feelings, when the rational response would be to not interfere?

[slow smile] Ah, Omega, you mistake me once again for the body you're wearing. Emotions haven't led me for centuries. [and then it fades] Until now, and they're strange emotions at that.

Such as?

Intense indignation, righteous fury, and the compulsion to act on them immediately.

And this is a recent occurence?

Yes. It's been building up for a bit, and this time it was too much to contain.
